The key issue is that neither the official autopsy nor the independent ones found direct physical trauma to the neck, airway, or lungs that is typically expected in classic cases of “strangulation” or traumatic asphyxiation.

There were no crushed windpipes, no fractured hyoid bone, no bruised airway, and no damage inside the lungs.

His lungs were “heavy” (2x - 3x heavier than normal) with fluid (pulmonary edema), which can be caused by heart failure or opioid overdose (especially fentanyl).

The fentanyl level in his blood was high… by itself, enough to potentially kill some people, and Dr. Baker said if Floyd had been found dead at home with these levels, “I would conclude that it was an overdose death”.

There were severe heart issues (atherosclerosis, an enlarged heart) that also put him at higher risk.

Derek was charged with murder because they twisted themselves into a pretzel to come up with a theory on how his airway could have been blocked. They had no evidence. They have all the evidence it was overdose combined with heart issues.
