Most people's average salary is equal to a kid's yearly school fee in big cities. Who is responsible?

The school fee for a decent school in Gurugram could easily be 20-25K/month.

Just for context: if you assume an average CTC to be around 5.5L-- in hand, this would not be more than 35K/month.

You could say: send your kids to government schools or don't live in Gurugram or Mumbai.

But, think about this: most parents want best for their kids.
That is one of the prime reasons why they work hard.

Sending kids to tier-2 schools is not something that most parents would willingly want to do.

Unlike other countries, in India, the Public School system is looked down upon (not only by individuals, but even by lawmakers)

For example: the Right to Education (RTE) act enforces a 25% reservation in private schools for disadvantaged students.

If our public education system were good. The government itself would have scaled it up. And, made it a matter of pride.

What RTE simply did was: that it killed the supply of several 'average' private school in our country. These schools were operating on razor thing margins (used to charge lower fees).

With 25% reservation under RTE-- in one stroke -- it killed the business model of these average schools. And, reduced the supply.

On the flip side, it left room for big name schools to build bigger monopolies.

They offered 25% reservation as per the norms.
And, jacked up the fee for everyone else.

And, hence now we have reached a stage: where most people's average salary equals a kid's yearly school fee.

After almost 15 years of this rule coming into effect:

- People still stay away from public school system.
- Pay taxes to fund public schools.
- And try to somehow fund their kid's education in private schools.

10 years down the line: I am certain that while the average salary might go up by 50Rs, the school fee rise will go up by 100Rs.

Why? because at one stage we supported an economically ill thought out freebie program (that just sounded good).
