Nikol Pashinyan’s government is preparing legislative changes that would make it harder for ethnic Armenians abroad to obtain Armenian citizenship.

Acting Deputy Interior Minister Armen Ghazaryan described the current system, which does not impose additional requirements on ethnic Armenians, as a “problem” that must be resolved.

“The Republic of Armenia does not impose any requirements on ethnic Armenians for obtaining citizenship. In my opinion, this is a problem, and it must be resolved,” Ghazaryan said.

Citizenship applications have risen sharply in recent years, exceeding 32,000 in 2025 and 20,000 annually in both 2023 and 2024, compared with roughly 7,000 to 8,000 in earlier years.

Those figures may also include Armenians forcibly displaced from Artsakh who were required to go through citizenship procedures in Armenia, meaning the increase cannot simply be presented as a surge of diaspora Armenians seeking a more convenient passport.

The planned restrictions come shortly after amendments adopted in July limited participation in parliamentary elections and referendums to citizens who were physically present in Armenia for at least 366 of the previous 730 days.

The direction is especially significant for Armenia, a country whose diaspora has long been central to its national life. Armenians abroad have played an outsized role in supporting Armenia through investment, philanthropy, humanitarian assistance, advocacy, education, cultural preservation and professional networks.

Rather than making those ties easier to maintain and deepen, Pashinyan’s government is moving in the opposite direction, placing new barriers around both citizenship and political participation.

For a country with a global Armenian population extending far beyond its borders, weakening those connections is not a minor administrative change. It directly affects one of Armenia’s most important national resources: its relationship with the diaspora.

A brand new bridge between Detroit and Canada is finished and ready to open. It would speed up traffic for millions of trucks, cut delays for American businesses, and help the auto industry that employs people in every state. There is just one problem.

Donald Trump won’t let it open.

Here is why.

The family that owns the old bridge stands to lose business when the new one opens. So in January, they gave one million dollars to a pro-Trump super PAC.

Weeks later they met with Trump’s Commerce Secretary.

He called Trump.

Hours after that, Trump announced he would block the new bridge. The opening was set for June 12. It got canceled the day before. The bridge sits there finished and empty.

Now here is the part that should make every taxpayer angry.

Canada paid for the entire bridge.

Every dollar. And the United States already owns half of it for free. Trump is holding up a bridge we got for nothing, to protect a donor who wrote him a check, while picking a fight with our closest ally and biggest trading partner.

This is corruption in plain sight.

A billionaire pays, and the President delivers. American workers and businesses pay the price.

Open the bridge. A government should work for the people, not for whoever writes the biggest check.

Dismantling a government is simple compared to the grinding work of reforming the institutions, habits, and cultural rot that led us here.

Armenians cannot fall into the same trap of the “Velvet Revolution” by believing that removing Nikol will suffice.

He needs to go, without doubt, as he bleeds us out everyday he remains in power. But real renewal will only come in the form of grinding, steady, disciplined, long-term work.

Everything else is a fantasy.

Pashinyan is our punishment. The embodiment of our cultural sins. That’s why our target has to be the deeper culture of decay that allows him to thrive.

He’s just the symptom. We need to tackle the disease.
