New Publication Alert
The new policy brief from our Just Green Technology Transition Programme by Teniola T. Tayo explores how the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) can be a game-changer for scaling opportunities in innovation, entrepreneurship, and employment for the youth in the green tech space.
Key findings of the paper include:
The AfCFTA as a Catalyst: The AfCFTA can accelerate green industrialisation by boosting intra-African trade in green technologies and reducing reliance on imports, unlocking large-scale youth employment across sectors like energy, manufacturing, and services. For this to happen, Governments will need to implement youth-centric trade policies, create green innovation zones with incentives for young entrepreneurs, and promote mutual recognition of greentech qualifications to ensure young people are at the forefront of this transformation.
Indigenous and Digital Integration: Combining Indigenous environmental knowledge with digital innovation can make green growth more inclusive and context-relevant, particularly in rural areas, while supporting culturally grounded, sustainable livelihoods. For this to truly benefit youth, policies must intentionally support the protection and scaling of Indigenous technologies, expand digital infrastructure and training, and connect rural youth with green value chains where their knowledge and skills can thrive.
Policy and Investment Priorities: Strategic action in investment promotion, skills development, and trade facilitation is essential. Targeted policies and cross-sector partnerships can create up to 9 million green jobs by 2030 under a just energy transition. To ensure these jobs reach young Africans, there must be dedicated financing for youth-led green tech ventures, alignment between education systems and green economy skills, and streamlined trade systems that enable young innovators to scale regionally.

Our latest Short Analysis from the Economy and Society program, "How Bureaucracies Work: AUDA-NEPAD’s Approach to Trade and Industrialisation," by financial strategist Kossi Toulassi spotlights AUDA-NEPAD’s evolving role in driving trade and industrialisation across Africa.
This paper explores how AUDA-NEPAD navigates between donor influence, national interests, and private sector engagement to deliver continental initiatives.
It finds that despite significant progress in developing policy frameworks and fostering high-level partnerships, AUDA-NEPAD faces persistent implementation challenges. These include weak coordination, regulatory inconsistencies, insufficient member state funding, limited domestic resource mobilization, and a disconnect between policy design and execution. Specifically, efforts towards trade and green industrialization are hampered by these systemic issues and an over-reliance on external financing.
To realize AUDA-NEPAD's transformative potential, the analysis recommends stronger country-level action, enhanced stakeholder ownership, and pragmatic approaches tailored to Africa’s diverse local realities. Overcoming barriers such as inadequate skills, limited technology adoption, and ineffective regional market integration will be crucial for achieving sustainable and inclusive economic growth across the continent.
