Being gay in Ghana is not as illegal as being poor and gay.

Poor queer people are the ones who suffer the most from anti-queer laws. Because if you have safe shelter, ain’t no one checking for gay people in Ghana 🇬🇭 you’re most vulnerable if you don’t have shelter that allows you privacy.

For instance living as a gay man in a compound house is not safe, living as a queer man in a home guarded by security now thats safe.

Which is why you don’t see so many wealthy queer people in Ghana fighting the cause, because they don’t need to, why would they, they are safe.

Kumasi-based content creator Mr. Amprah, popularly known as Last Hero, has publicly expressed disappointment in his former content creation partner, Asafo Powers, also known as Killa Ntua, over alleged remarks directed at his parents following his wife’s funeral last Saturday.

According to Last Hero, Killa Ntua insulted his own parents for attending the funeral ceremony. The two content creators, once known for working together as a duo, reportedly parted ways after internal misunderstandings within the group.

Speaking on the matter, Last Hero said he was unbothered by Killa Ntua’s decision not to attend the funeral but found it disturbing that his former colleague verbally attacked his parents for being present at the event.

A young man was arrested yesterday after attempting to steal a vehicle. The suspect fled the scene in the car but was pursued by a group of motorbike riders, forcing him to crash, which led to his apprehension.

The suspect admitted that he did not know what came over him to attempt the theft.

Steps to Replace Burnt Ghana Cedi Notes (Serial Numbers Visible):

1. Prepare the notes: Collect all remnants without altering them (no tape/glue). Note visible serial numbers and denominations. If from a fire, get a police report to prove accidental damage.

2. Visit a commercial bank: Start at any branch (e.g., GCB Bank, etc). Present notes, serial numbers, ID, and report. Minor damage: often exchanged immediately. Severe (burnt): bank assesses or forwards to Bank of Ghana.

3. If needed, go to Bank of Ghana: Take directly to any BoG branch. They verify authenticity/value. Visible serial numbers help a lot.

Replacement is free, and you may receive full or partial value depending on how much of the note remains and whether it is deemed genuine (i.e., not deliberately mutilated). Deliberately damaged notes (e.g., intentionally burnt or altered for fraudulent purposes) will not be replaced.

Whatever disagreements I may have had with her, Madam Sophia Akuffo understood the utility of the privileged position that the legal profession stood in, in relation to the structures of authority and sought to preserve it. I did not agree with how she tried to do it, but I understood what she was trying to do. And it was worth doing.

I also do not fault non-lawyers for resenting that privileged position and, as a consequence, seeking to dismantle it. It’s not fair, I agree…but that privileged position has utility, and the biggest beneficiaries of that privilege are not the lawyers, but our Clients.

So that if the police or other government agencies or administrative authorities treat lawyers with a level of deference bordering on awe, the biggest beneficiary of that deference will be the person the lawyer is representing before that government agency or authority.

When Ama Governor and Oliver got arrested, I made the case that the Ghana Bar Association needed to get involved, regardless of whether Ama Governor and Oliver were members of the association itself.

The reason is simple: the treatment that both lawyers received had implications for the rest of us. If they could arrest, detain and deny legal representation to any one lawyer with no consequences, they can do the same to all lawyers. And if they can do the same to all lawyers, we all lose something.

So as an existential matter and in the interest of preserving the soft power of the legal profession, I believed then, as I believe now, the Ghana Bar Association ought to have gotten involved.

Deciding to turn a blind eye and a deaf ear was honestly mind-boggling to me. Like…it’s one of those decisions that leaves you genuinely intrigued about the cognitive process that led up to it.

A year on, it’s happened once again, this time, to Martin Kpebu. And once again, one would have hoped that the right lessons would have been learned, and applied. Yet…here we are.

It’s important that the leadership of the Ghana Bar Association understand what the Ghana Bar Association is and what it is not.

The Ghana Bar Association isn’t a quasi-governmental institution for lawyers. The Executives do not rule over us, legislate for us or sit in judgment of us. The Association is a union of lawyers who realize that we possess a greater power to affect our fortunes and our immediate environment, as a collective, than we do as individuals.

Unfortunately the promise of that power - being the betterment of our fortunes - has not been realized. And if you’re inclined to dismiss this as the ramblings of a rabble rouser, ask yourself…

In what specific way has the Ghana Bar Association affected your life positively since you became a lawyer?

Yes. Exactly.

So the GBA irrelevant in your life as an individual and it won’t even take the most obvious steps to protect the standing, in society, of the profession as a whole.

And so my question: What exactly are the executives doing in their roles then?
