Ever since the latest World Cup controversies, many Brazilian football fans have argued that the rest of the football world is only now beginning to notice what they’ve been talking about for years.

Their criticism has rarely been about Argentina’s quality. Instead, they point to what they see as excessive gamesmanship: tactical fouls, constant time-wasting, surrounding referees, and repeatedly pushing the limits of what officials are willing to tolerate. In their view, the recent tournament simply brought those long-standing complaints into the global spotlight.
