@GlenWilsonIA A mix of models from different vendors is often better at metacognition preventing AI from getting stuck against a wall without being aware of it
Geoffrey Hinton (who won a Nobel Prize for his AI work) suggested in a recent interview that advanced AI may already be conscious. Considering how different AI is from the human brain in many ways, what exactly does that mean? How do we prove or disprove it?
@OKairra19658 It’s not just that we can’t define it from the inside — it’s that we never needed to before. Humans have never encountered anything this advanced and had to decide whether it’s conscious.
@GlenWilsonIA Yes, his arguments are a bit weak. It is interesting though that an AI scientist of that level of experience, knowledge, and standing thinks that AI may already be conscious
When will we have AGI? There is no ‘when’. AI has already surpassed humans at some tasks, will surpass them at many more soon, and will struggle at others for a long time. No single moment, no single threshold.
@Alexlee71744160 The problem is that it’s cheaper to poach another firm’s seniors than to invest years growing your own — especially when nothing stops competitors from poaching from you. Firms see the global harm of such a model but can’t fix it without legislative support
A growing gap: margins force companies to lean on experienced staff + AI instead of investing in junior talent. But who will replace them when they retire? And, can experience drive innovation?
What do we need to break this cycle?
Maybe football academy model? AI-native apprenticeship from early college or even high school. State co-funds comp, new employers pay transfer fees on hire. Training becomes supervised judgment building and a profit center. Market prices talent quality. Cost shifts from students to employers.
In ancient Athens, citizens didn’t have to work. Art, science, philosophy, literature, material culture were blooming. Will the age of AI bring the same?
@CarmenMcCoy53 Free citizens did not have to work because there were several slave workers for every free citizen. In the age of AI there will be many intelligent machines for every human.
