How does a country make itself safe and productive?

Great Britain did it with Christianity—and by executing or imprisoning the worst males in every generation for hundreds of years.

By the 1960s, the country was so civilized that policeman carried nothing but a nightstick, everybody queued without a second thought, and newspaper boxes were left unlocked on the high street.

Britain had become a so-called high trust society — less euphemistically, an honest society.

Something similar—without the Christianity—transpired in Japan.

What happens to such a country if it forgets how difficult that was to attain?

These are incredibly difficult days for us Israelis .

Nothing has happened yet, but once again, there is talk of war. Once again, people are discussing possible attacks, missiles, shelters and what may come next. Families are messaging one another, groups are filled with rumors and anxiety, and the entire country is living inside that unbearable space between fear and uncertainty.

Since October 7, we have barely had a moment to breathe. It has been one war after another, one tragedy after another, one layer of grief placed on top of the last. Even before the next escalation begins, the emotional weight is already here.

This is not normal. No society should be expected to live indefinitely under the threat of another war, never knowing when the next siren, attack or loss may come.

And while Israelis are carrying this fear, grief and exhaustion, antisemites and Israel-haters gather in X Spaces and across social media to spread lies, dehumanize us and turn our suffering into propaganda against us.

They speak about Israelis and Jews with a cruelty and hatred they would never dare direct at anyone else.

We are not propaganda. We are human beings.

We are parents, children, families and communities who have endured unimaginable loss and still wake up every morning trying to live, work, love and hope.

Tonight, I am simply tired. Tired of war. Tired of waiting for war. Tired of grief. Tired of lies. And tired of having to prove that Israeli lives matter.
