I was in court this morning when a case was mentioned that stopped me mid-conversation with a colleague.

The defendant had reported himself.

Not through a lawyer. Not after a plea bargain negotiation. He just walked into the station three months ago, asked for the IPO, and confessed to obtaining money by false pretense from someone he had defrauded four years ago.

The victim hadn't reported it. As far as the police were concerned, no crime had been committed. There was no file, no complainant, nothing.

He created his own case.

When the prosecutor was narrating the background to the judge, even she seemed slightly thrown off. She kept her composure but you could tell this was not something she had encountered before.

The judge asked him directly, "You came to the police yourself?"

He said yes.

"Why?"

He said he had turned a new leaf and could not continue knowing what he had done to that man was sitting unresolved. He said he had already gone back to the victim privately and made arrangements to refund everything, but he felt that wasn't enough. That the law also deserved to know.

The victim himself was in court. He had written a letter asking for leniency. He said the money had been refunded in full and he had forgiven him completely.

The judge adjourned for ruling.

Mirabel could face up to 10 years in prison and fines reaching ₦25 million after investigators established that her viral rape allegation was false, triggering serious criminal consequences under Nigerian law.

The Ogun State Police Command, which handled the investigation due to the alleged incident occurring in Ogijo, has shifted focus to offences connected to false reporting and the electronic spread of misinformation.

Under the Criminal Code Act, anyone who knowingly spreads false statements capable of causing public fear or disturbing public peace faces up to three years imprisonment.

The same law also criminalizes giving false information to police, an offence that carries imprisonment upon conviction, particularly where public resources were deployed based on the report.

Because the allegation was widely circulated online, the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015 may carry the heaviest penalty.

Section 24 provides that knowingly transmitting false information electronically in a manner likely to cause panic, reputational harm, or public disorder attracts up to ₦7 million in fines and/or three years imprisonment.

Where the impact is deemed aggravated due to widespread national attention or disruption, the punishment rises sharply to as much as 10 years imprisonment and/or a ₦25 million fine.

While formal charges have not yet been publicly announced, a conviction under the aggravated cybercrime provisions would expose Mirabel to a decade behind bars, substantial financial penalties, and a permanent criminal record.
