The average British adult spends four and a half hours a day online. Please take four and a half minutes to read this indispensable article. Then let's all go read a smart novel in the sunshine.
I Hear A New World class Alan Moore book is out! Enjoy the best Long London weekend ever with this astounding second novel in the spectacular series. Here in all its @Waterstones special edition glory.
At the Sports Awards and Sir Bradley Wiggins is pointing out the person who helped make THE CHAIN such a good book: his brilliant ghostwriter @jwoody67!
In 2018, a bizarre and shocking incident occurred at Russia’s Bellingshausen Station in Antarctica when one scientist stabbed his colleague for repeatedly spoiling the endings of books.
Engineer Sergey Savitsky, 55, attacked 52-year-old researcher Oleg Beloguzov with a kitchen knife after becoming furious over his colleague’s habit of revealing plot twists in the novels Savitsky was reading.
The assault is believed to be the first recorded case of attempted murder on the Antarctic continent. Savitsky had turned to books as an escape from the extreme isolation and harsh conditions of polar life. However, the combination of constant spoilers, prolonged confinement, and alcohol consumption ultimately pushed him to violence.
Beloguzov survived the stabbing and was evacuated to Chile for medical treatment. Savitsky was charged with attempted murder but was later released to house arrest in Russia.
The case drew international attention and highlighted the serious mental health challenges faced by researchers living in extreme isolation for long periods.
Congratulations @maxdaniellawton for winning the prestigious Wolff translator’s prize! What a monumental book SHATTENFROH is, and what an equally monumental, stellar and now prize-winning translation! https://t.co/cxt5wq2ClO

There really is only so much ‘raucously inventive state-of-the-nation satire’ to go round… the most part is in this blisteringly brilliant novel! https://t.co/WTbUYAvMLZ
A happy pub day to this bloody wondrous novel: THE QUANTITY THEORY OF MORALITY by Will Self.
“Reads like early Nabokov: barbed, provocative, virtuosic in his performance of linguistic jokes…rollicking, unsettling and furiously intelligent” - Guardian
