IOWA CITY, Iowa – In a recent viral post, Libs of TikTok posted a picture of what the hallway looked like at Weber Elementary School in the Iowa City Community School District.

It appeared to be English affirmation posters with Arabic under every line. “We are deserving” sits over نحن نستحق. “We are special,” “we are role models,” “we are fearless,” and “we are powerful” get the same treatment.

The source also said that door and parking signs are in Arabic too. This doesn’t sound much like a world language lesson. This is the school quite literally transforming its identity and conditioning its children to see it as a norm.

Iowa City Schools already lists Arabic among the main home languages after Spanish and French, and runs translation as official policy.

Weber is already in the bottom half of Iowa schools on math and reading. The job is to teach English and raise scores, not to decorate the hall like we’re in Saudi Arabia.

This is the same district that can’t even keep its books straight. The fiscal 2024 audit found more than $38 million in interfund loans moved without required board approval, a violation of state law, plus five material weaknesses in payroll, bills, cash, bank reconciliations, and year-end accounting.

Then came $7.5 million in cuts, a thin unspent balance, and a trip to the state School Budget Review Committee. No documented fraud, just years of sloppy books, late audits, and forced entries.

A district that cannot authorize its own transfers still has time to teach its students Arabic with rainbow borders. Parents are not crazy for asking why Iowa public schools are hanging foreign-language signage while the money walks and the test scores sit in the bottom half.

Teach the kids English. This is America. This is what we speak, not the language of the enemy. Unless you have a personal stake in teaching otherwise.
