What sticks out the most to me from this class is the war on drugs/mass incarceration. What I was taught growing up and what I know now are two entirely different worlds. If nothing else this class has been a big reality check. #SOCL214

@GenyuanL It is really backwards how difficult it is to get in, I mean there is a reason why illegal immigration happens so much. Naturally, America’s response is to militarize the border instead of solve the problem, similar to their response with the war on drugs. #SOCL214

I always knew the immigration process was pretty long and stupid, but I never knew the specifics, this just reinforces my idea that there wouldn’t even be an immigration debate if we had a half decent immigration system, because illegal immigration wouldn’t be a problem. #SOCL214

Even knowing how the criminal justice system acts racist, it’s really eye opening to see the incarceration rates visualized. It’s just astounding that we have so many prisoners in general, and that such a large majority of them are black. #SOCL214

@JozieSocl214 Yeah I think a big problem when it comes to making people realize these injustices is getting them past the idea that the city/neighborhood they’re in can be racist, even if they themselves aren’t. It can be a big hurdle for people to get over though. #SOCL214

@Mariek157 I think schools being funded by property taxes is a big part of the problem. If the property tax was split evenly between cities/counties I feel like that would be better. The way it is right now only compounds the history of racial segregation in this country. #SOCL214

As an urban planning student, Im familiar with the practices in this video, and redlining was only compounded by planning practices like urban renewal. I think the government needs to make reparations to the neighborhoods that have been redlined and destroyed. #SOCL214

@brat_tani From the video, it sounds like it’s on its way out over time. I’m just hoping we can make progress in achieving racial equity so that we wouldn’t even need a system in place like affirmative action.

Even though affirmative action isn’t a perfect solution, I do think that it’s sad the government won’t allow itself to open the can of worms that is fixing racial injustices. It would be a long, difficult road, but I feel it’s the only way to get to a better solution. #SOCL214

The thing that stuck out to me with this video was how much of a negative effect this stereotype actually has. Growing up I have heard people say that it’s not a bad stereotype because being smart is a good thing, but after watching this I can see how wrong that is #socl214

@EberleBrent I think a big reason they don’t talk about it is because they have this notion that people are trying to make them feel guilty, which just isn’t true, but unfortunately that idea still remains.

In my experience, when it comes to privilege I think the biggest roadblock for most people is that they might feel called out or guilty, or like their achievements are being belittled. But it’s exists everywhere and we should strive to be more aware of it #SOCL214

I’ve never understood why people have problems with their natural hair, this is something I saw a lot in high school, everyone was very focused on straightening their hair which confused me, there’s nothing wrong with anyone’s natural hair #SOCL214

@GenyuanL It was kind of jarring seeing just how racist the depiction of black people was in older movies, and I’m sure we didn’t even see the worst of it from the clips in the video.

@XboxSupport My party chat won’t work, whenever I’m in a party I can’t hear anyone and it looks like the party is muted even though it isn’t. I’ll also just be randomly disconnected sometimes too but my internet and connection are fine.
