Having seen the parade of puffed-up poltroons at last night’s Met Gala in NYC I’m beginning to think it a pity these pro-Palestinian demonstrators didn’t manage to break through NYPD lines and cause a bit of chaos among the strutting toplofty punchinellos. Would have been amusing watching these solipsistic scarecrows in their absurd “regardez-moi!” outfits trying to cope with a dose of reality.

There is a case in equity for the Tory changes to non-dom status and for Labour’s further closing of loopholes announced this morning. But the case in terms of revenue generation is much weaker. Politicians make tax changes but assume their targets will not change behaviour. Wrong. Labour’s changes in particular will speed up a departure of non-doms that is already underway. The combined Tory/Labour changes make the tax system fairer (in that non-doms treated like everybody else). They will not necessarily generate any more revenue and indeed might cost it revenue. You might say — good riddance. Fair enough. Provided you start thinking about where else to raise revenue given the likely erosion of the tax base. Fairness and extra revenues do not always = the same thing, whatever politicians would have you believe.
