Schopenhauer’s Will & COVID Pandemic Irrationality

Schopenhauer spent his life arguing that human beings are not rational animals.

COVID proved him right at civilizational scale.

His central claim was radical and remains deeply uncomfortable: beneath the surface of human decision-making, beneath the careful justifications and evidence-based language and deliberate choices, operates a blind, irrational force he called the Will.
The Will does not reason. It drives. It pushes relentlessly toward survival, safety, belonging, and the avoidance of pain, and it uses the rational mind not as a navigator but as a press secretary.
The rational mind does not make the decision.

It explains it afterward in language that sounds like it did.

Apply this to the pandemic.

Millions of people made compliance decisions, masking, vaccinating, excluding, reporting, that they described in the language of evidence, responsibility, and scientific reasoning.
But watch the sequence carefully.

The fear came first. The social pressure came first. The desperate desire to be safe, to belong, to do something in the face of helplessness came first.
The science was assembled afterward to justify what the Will had already decided.

This is why changing people’s minds with data was so extraordinarily difficult. You were not arguing with their reasoning. You were arguing with their fear. And fear does not respond to bar charts.

This is why decent minds, people with every analytical tool available, sometimes complied most enthusiastically, and constructed the most elaborate justifications for doing so.

The Will is not less powerful in intelligent people. It is more effectively rationalized.

Schopenhauer’s diagnosis was bleak. But his prescription was not.
Awareness of the Will, genuine, unflinching awareness that the drive toward safety and belonging is operating beneath your reasoning, is the beginning of a sort of freedom available.

Not the elimination of fear. The recognition of it.

The difference between I believe the science supports this and I am frightened, and that fear is shaping how I am reading the science.

That gap, small, uncomfortable, and requiring real honesty to maintain, is where genuine thinking lives.

Schopenhauer never promised it would be easy.

He only promised it was worth it.

İşi-gücü olup, maddi durumu azıcık iyi olan insan için net tablo budur. Evlilik ve çocuk, büyük oranda fakirler içindir. Free sex, ucuz yemek, ağır işlerinde sana el tutacak çocuk ve.s.

Bir de işin sistemsel boyutu var. Kapitalist sistem, tüketim sayesinde ayakta kalır. Bu sebeple sistem, özellikle Soğuk Savaş'ın bitişinden sonra insanlara evlenmeme düşüncesini aşıladı. Çünkü bekar insan, keyfi için daha fazla para harcar. Ama bu da bir öz sabotaj vakasına döndü. Çünkü nüfus azalıyor, nüfus azalınca da otomatik tüketim de azalacak.

Bir de en önemli konu, kadınların "özgürleşmesi" faktörü var. Orpluk bu sebeple arttı. Kimse orpudan çocuk yapmak istemez.
