Werth's USSR chapter tallied approximately 15M deaths; Courtois rounded that to 20M. Margolin said he had "never mentioned a million deaths in Vietnam"; Courtois had. The country chapters totalled approximately 85M; Courtois pushed this to "nearly 100M" in his introduction to manufacture parity with Nazism. Werth and Margolin called him "obsessed" with the round number. Post-1991 archival research by Wheatcroft, Davies, Getty and Zemskov, working from NKVD records, gives approximately 681,692 political executions in 1937-38, 5.5 to 6.5M deaths in the 1932-33 famine, and 1.5 to 1.7M deaths across the entire Gulag system from 1930 to 1953. None of this denies real deaths under Soviet or Maoist policy. The archives document them.

Now apply the same methodology symmetrically. Peer-reviewed study, World Development 2023: Dylan Sullivan and Jason Hickel calculate approximately 100M excess deaths in India during the period of British colonial rule, 1881-1920, using Census of India data. One country. 40 years. Indian mortality rose 19%; life expectancy fell to 22 years; grain was exported during famines; tariffs destroyed Indian manufacturing. Mike Davis, Late Victorian Holocausts: 30 to 60M deaths across India, China, Brazil and Ethiopia in three colonial-era famines, 1876-1902. The 1943 Bengal famine: 2 to 3M deaths in one year, confirmed by Mishra et al (Geophysical Research Letters 2019) as the only famine in the 1873-1943 period in India not caused by drought. Policy-driven. Since 1990, around 16M deaths from preventable malnutrition globally, in a food system that produces more than enough for the world's population.

The asymmetry is not in the deaths. It is in which deaths get counted. When a famine occurs under a communist government, it counts as "victims of communism". When a famine occurs under a colonial capitalist regime, the standard response is that the system was incidental. Same death. Different bookkeeping.

The 100M figure for communism collapsed under its own contributors in 1997. The figure for capitalism, calculated by peer-reviewed research using primary census data, stands.

.@elonmusk says that no one can name a person who died from his aid cuts. In fact, I've met the kids who are dying, and I've talked to the families who lost children. In my columns, I've cited many, many names of people who have died because of Musk's aid cuts. A few examples:
*Yamah Freeman was a 23-year-old woman who died in childbirth because Musk cut funding for the diesel for ambulances in her part of Liberia. She couldn't get to a hospital and died as people were carrying her there. I talked to her parents and sister in their village.
*Gbessey Kiadu, age 1, died of malaria because of his cuts to malaria medication in Liberia. I talked to his mom in her village.
*Ibrahim Koroma, an infant, died of AIDS in Sierra Leone after he interrupted HIV supplies. I talked to health workers who cared for him.
*Achol Deng was an 8-year-old girl with HIV in South Sudan who died when Musk cut funding for the health care worker who provided her medicines. I talked to the healthcare workers.
I could go on and on. In almost every village you go to in South Sudan, Uganda, Liberia, Sierra Leone or other countries I reported in, you find people dying because of aid cuts. I challenge Musk: Come with me on a reporting trip, and we'll talk to these moms and dads, and you'll see the dying children themselves. I think if you see the kids whose lives are at stake, maybe you'll change your mind.
