According to unofficial figures, at least 21 of the 28 people killed during recent protests across Pakistan were residents of Gilgit-Baltistan, most of them young men.
Dozens more were injured, while an unknown number have been booked under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA).
The demonstrations, which later turned violent, began following the reported assassination of Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei in a joint U.S.–Israeli airstrike in Iran.
During the unrest in Skardu, one army personnel was shot dead. Another reportedly died inside a building that had allegedly been set on fire by protesters.
Several public and private properties were damaged or torched. In Skardu, these included a United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) office, an Army Public School, an IT Park, residences of security personnel, offices of non-profit organizations, and police offices.
In Gilgit city, a UNMOGIP office and an office of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) were also set ablaze.
