The Pakistani middle class is not shrinking. It is being erased.Daily petrol hike. Daily diesel hike. We are being executed in public and told it is economics.Fill the tank or feed the children. Pay the school or keep the lights on. Choose which part of your life dies first. The government will not stop until the word “middle class” only exists as a notion.

MALIR IS NOT FOR SALE
Today, Azeem Dhakan’s ancestral agricultural land was taken for the Bhutto Expressway after police detained him and members of his family. This is not merely a land dispute...1/6

“Under one proposal being discussed, Karachi and Gwadar could come under the administrative control of the federal government, while the rest of Sindh would remain a single province.”

Honorable Sheikh Jaffar Khan Mandokhail, Governor of Balochistan province of Pakistan, reached the United Nations headquarters to represent the country at the Youth and AI Summit 2026 being organized by the International Organization of Youth in partnership with the Permanent Missions of the Bahamas and Dominica.
He was received by Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN, and officers of the Mission on arrival at the UN headquarters.
This is heartbreaking. If Pakistan ever lives up to its economic potential, it will be because millions of young Pakistanis started thinking like Mir Raza. He was trying to do that.
He has now been turned into an example why people should leave instead. Justice needs to prevail to create hope.
Your yearly reminder that today isn’t a military day.
The Pakistan army didn’t fight a war to win independence in 1947.
The day is about revolutionaries, you, me, our families that struggled and made it to Pakistan, and families that welcomed people to Pakistan.
It’s an absolute sham for responsible authorities who couldn’t able to provide justice to #MirRaza all those involved in fabrication of facts must be held accountable… we don’t deserve such shittiest police trying hard to protect the culprits by labelling the case as suicide
A 25 year old entrepreneur, who started Wafflix and gave back all the time to his alma mater IBA on lessons learned in his entrepreneurial journey, was kidnapped, tortured and murdered in Karachi. His body dumped.
Pakistani LinkedIn is in mourning. No major news channel picked it up. Because in our society people who provide jobs and generate economic value aren’t worth as much as the same politicians and same analysts discussing the same things with the same analysis for decades.
Such a tragedy. The fuel for the city of lights seems to be the blood of the brightest.
History will remember how at one of the country's most critical junctures in recent memory, from Naushki to AJK, and in the presence of rising terrorism and collapsing regional orders, PML-N and PPP were enacting a pitiable theatre of the absurd trying to distract attention from the core issues. They really think they can insult national intelligence and nobody will notice.
Annual cost of elite capture is more than $36 billion.
Pakistan’s most expensive economic problem is not debt, taxation, or even corruption in the conventional sense. It is a political economy where access to the state has become one of the country’s most profitable businesses.
In the earlier article, I estimated that elite capture costs Pakistan roughly Rs 6.7 trillion annually — equivalent to about 5.8 percent of GDP, or about $25 billion in 2024-25. This was the first comparable estimate since the 2020 United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) study on elite privilege, which attempted to quantify the benefits received by powerful groups using available official data. https://t.co/ciUE1Lrd9c
Many of the largest transfers of wealth in Pakistan never appear in these documents. They occur through privileged access to land, regulatory protection, restricted competition, under-taxation of assets and state-created economic advantages. These channels are harder to measure, but they may be far larger in aggregate. The Rs 6.7 trillion estimate should therefore be viewed not as the total cost of elite capture, but as its minimum measurable cost. The question is how much larger the real burden might be.

The federal cabinet has approved another special allowance for top bureaucracy – the second in four years – and sanctioned Rs1.8 billion budget in the middle of a further extension in austerity measures and a 7% raise for all government employees.
In the same meeting, the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif-led cabinet approved only a 7% increase in salaries for all government employees, including these possibly couple of hundred bureaucrats who will enjoy two special allowances, and also extended the austerity measures to the current fiscal year 2026-27.
The well-connected bureaucrats' salaries and perks have been on the rise, but the rest of the public sector employees are not compensated in the middle of biting inflation. Without first strengthening the regulator, the people are also exposed to imported inflation and now daily fluctuation in fuel prices – a new phenomenon.
