彼はしばらく黙っていたが、やがて私たちを部屋に招き入れた。
壁際には、開封されていない荷物が何十個も積み重なっていた。ほこりをかぶった箱もあれば、配達日ごとに丁寧に並べられたものもあった。
管理人が箱を一つ手に取り、宛名を読んだ。
8か月前にこのマンションを退去した、春菜さんという女性宛てだった。
そこで黒田さんは、事情を話し始めた。
2年前、妻が亡くなった。妻は入院する前に、ネットでいくつかの日用品を注文していたが、その一部は入院後に届いた。
妻が亡くなったあとも、夫婦で共有していたアカウントに関係する古い注文について、自動配達通知が届くことがあった。
黒田さんは販売元に問い合わせたものの、手続きが複雑で、事情をうまく説明できなかったという。
それから数か月後、亡くなった妻の名前が書かれた荷物がマンションに届いた。
彼は、忘れていた注文の一つだと思い、部屋に持ち帰った。
その後も荷物は届いた。退去した住人宛てのものもあれば、今も住んでいる人宛てのものもあった。
彼は一つずつ管理人に報告する代わりに、いつか勇気を出して整理しようと考え、荷物を自分の部屋にため込むようになった。
しかし、荷物は増え続けた。
やがて、妻に関係があるかもしれない荷物と、明らかに他人の荷物との区別さえ、しなくなってしまった。
私は箱を見つめた。
彼の悲しみが、最初に何が起きたのかを説明してくれた。でも、他人の荷物を持ち続けた理由まで正当化できるわけではなかった。
私：「今もここに住んでいる人宛ての荷物だと、わかっていたんですよね」
黒田さん：「はい」
私：「どうして管理人に相談しなかったんですか？」
彼はうつむいた。
黒田さん：「最初の数個を持ち帰ったあと、恥ずかしくなったんです。それから、説明したら泥棒だと思われるのが怖くなってしまって……」
皮肉な話だった。間違いを隠そうとした結果、彼は自分が恐れていた人物そのものに見えてしまったのだ。
管理人は、すべての荷物を返し、配送会社とも協力して記録を整理するよう求めた。
黒田さんは同意した。
しかし、帰る前に彼は一つだけお願いをした。
黒田さん：「妻宛ての荷物を探すのを手伝ってもらえませんか。どこから手をつければいいのか、もうわからないんです」
誰もすぐには答えられなかった。
すると、荷物が見つかった春菜さんが前に出た。
春菜さん：「整理するのは手伝います。でも、他の人の荷物は必ず返してください。そして、持ち去ってしまった方々に謝ってください」
黒田さんはうなずいた。
その日の午後、初めて彼の表情から緊張が消えたように見えた。

翌日、黒田さんがまた別の箱を持って階段を上がっていくのを見た。
私はついにエレベーターの前で声をかけた。
私：「すみません。他の人の荷物を持っていっていませんか？」
彼は足を止めた。
黒田さん：「自分のことだけ考えていればいい」
私：「荷物には受取人の名前が書いてあります。勝手に持っていっていいわけじゃありません」
彼は数秒間、私を見つめたあと、何も答えずに立ち去った。
その夜、私は管理人に見たことを伝えた。管理人は防犯カメラの映像を確認すると言った。
証拠もないのに誰かを疑ったことには罪悪感があった。でも、お金を払って買ったものを失くした住人たちを、これ以上見ていられなかった。
2日後、管理人から住人向けの話し合いがあると連絡が来た。
テーブルには、印刷された写真が何枚も並べられていた。どの写真にも、黒田さんが荷物を402号室へ運び込む姿が写っていた。
そして管理人は、私がまったく予想していなかったことを口にした。
「この件をどうするか、みなさんで考えたいと思います。ただ、警察に連絡する前に、402号室の中に何が保管されているのかを見てほしいんです」

I Met A Younger Girl at The Pub, who Got Off on doing Things My Wife Can’t do..

The pub was half full with the usual Friday night after work crowd when she caught my eye. 26 ish I assume, dark hair loose over her shoulders, tight black top and jeans that clung when she leaned across the high table to laugh with her friends. I’d only come in for a drink or two on the way home.
