AI safety research will probably remain to be on the backfoot. Yet, AI is bound to greatly impact our lives in the years and decades to come. We believe it is therefore critically important that we ramp up research on how to ensure this impact is as positive as possible. We are grateful to be able to contribute to these efforts thanks to funding received from the European Union (ERC Advanced Grant VIGILIA) and the Flemish AI Research program (FAIR).
We have just used the @Nvidia H100 onboard Starcloud-1 to train the first LLM in space!
We trained the nano-GPT model from Andrej @Karpathy on the complete works of Shakespeare and successfully ran inference on it.
We have also run inference on a preloaded Gemma model, and we plan to try more exciting models in the future.
Getting the first H100 to work in space required a lot of innovation and hard work from the incredible Starcloud team to make this breakthrough.
This is a significant first step toward moving almost all computing off Earth to reduce the burden on our energy supplies and take advantage of abundant solar energy in space! ๐
Tired to go back to the original papers again and again? Our monograph: a systematic and fundamental recipe you can rely on!
๐ Weโre excited to release ใThe Principles of Diffusion Modelsใโ with @DrYangSong, @gimdong58085414, @mittu1204, and @StefanoErmon.
It traces the core ideas that shaped diffusion modeling and explains how todayโs models work, why they work, and where theyโre heading.
๐งตYouโll find the link and a few highlights in the thread.
Weโd love to hear your thoughts and join some discussions!
โก Stay tuned for our markdown version, where you can drop your comments!
๐ฃ Here are some highlights related to our work on recommender systems, labour market analysis, and AI ethics.
๐ย Award Recognition
FEIR: Quantifying and Reducing Envy and Inferiority for Fair Recommendation of Limited Resourcesย (Nan Li, Bo Kang, Jefrey Lijffijt, @TijlDeBie) โ Received theย Women in RecSys Best Journal Paper Awardย at @ACMRecSys 2025. The paper introduces new fairness notions (inferiorityย alongsideย envy) and proposes the FEIR framework, enabling fairer allocation of limited opportunities such as jobs and dating matches.
๐ย Accepted Papers
Building Data-Driven Occupation Taxonomies: A Bottom-Up Multi-Stage Approach via Semantic Clustering and Multi-Agent Collaboration (Nan Li, Bo Kang, @TijlDeBie) โ @emnlpmeeting Industrial Track. Recognized as "a valuable, well-executed system paper with a clear and real-world application, ... supported by a well-designed evaluation study across multiple real-world datasets". It presents CLIMB, a scalable framework for constructing adaptive, data-driven occupation taxonomies.
Content-Agnostic Moderation for Stance-Neutral Recommendationย (Nan Li, Bo Kang, @TijlDeBie ) โ @cikm2025 Full Research Paper. Reviewers praised the paper asย โwell-written in every aspect; a pleasure to read.โย It combines theoretical insights with empirical validation, proposing moderation methods that enhance stance neutrality without relying on content features.
Human-AI Moral Judgment Congruence on Real-World Scenarios: A Cross-Lingual Analysisย (Nan Li, Bo Kang, @TijlDeBie ) โ @emnlpmeeting 2025 Workshop. This study highlights how large language models diverge from human moral judgments and how their decisions shift across languages, raising important questions for AI alignment and ethics.
โจ These works reflect our commitment to developingย fair, ethical, and practical AI methodsย with strong theoretical foundations and real-world applications.
We are very proud of the team and look forward to continuing to shape the conversation at the intersection ofย AI, ethics, and society. Links ot all papers in the first comment โฌ๏ธโฌ๏ธโฌ๏ธ
