Europeans aren't poor. They are illiquid. Much of Europe's wealth is stored in safe streets, nice parks, public transit, "free" healthcare, etc. which, it turns out, are too socially expensive for Americans to maintain. Americans take the money instead. The rest is only natural.
If the child on the left was old enough to pick cotton and the child on the right was old enough to attend Klan rallies, then today's children are old enough to learn about both of these and how they've led us to where we are today.
One thing I'll never get my head around is why hard working immigrants who pay their taxes are seen as some sort of problem, but billionaires who use the labour & infrastructure of a country to expand their wealth and still don't pay any tax are worshiped like economic heroes...
