@aminashareefali This thread has stayed with me. I realized at the time that you wrote it that I wasn't able to muster the "deep self-esteem" needed to be reliable at that moment, but I have been trying to stay with it and today I'm trying again. Thank you for your voice.
@ling_sprenger Have done, will do again. I get that fanning is problematic, but also, fully in favor of human interaction over a depersonalized public sphere.
I have had student parents tell me they were planning on attending exploitative for-profit colleges because none of the normal schools were flexible enough to let them parent. Look for the policies that exclude parents at your institution and work to change them.
Making space to talk and share about accessibility at the beginning and middle of the course is also important. Student parents are used to being excluded, it’s up to you to let them know you don’t want to run your classroom that way.
