India's next move!!- The Economist!!
Thought provoking article on the latest tariffs imposed by the USA on Indian merchandise exports and how India should respond. The article appeared in September first week edition of “The Economist” magazine. The article talks not only Economics but also international diplomacy. Here is the gist:
1. President Trump has undone 25 years of diplomacy by singling out India (5th largest economy) by imposing tariffs (50%) which are even higher than China.
2. On 27th August, Trump imposed tariff surcharge of 25% on India, in addition to the existing 25% import tariff on Indian goods, for buying Russian oil.
3. India seems to have been singled out for this punishment, even though much of the world, including China buys Russian oil.
4. India is a rising democratic and economic power with $4 trillion economy and $ 5 trillion stock market.
5. India has made substantial progress in terms of infrastructure like roads, airports, digital payments and tax platforms. It has a strong financial system with deep capital markets built on domestic savings and balanced Current Account (will be explained in #100concepts in #100days).
6. India's GDP growth is expected to be over 6%, making it world's most dynamic big economy, and third biggest economy by 2028, as per IMF projections.
7. India should consider making some concessions including tariff cuts on imports from USA, buying less Russian oil and more American natural gas, to protect it's long term interests.
8. India should also sign more Bilateral Trade Agreements, like the ones signed recently with UK and UAE.
9. India needs some big bang reforms including deregulation, modernization of agriculture, land and power distribution etc to maintain its dynamism.
