This image from Nun Kun immediately reminded me of one of the most remarkable helicopter rescues in #IAFHistory.

The technique looks almost unreal. There is no landing ground, so the pilot effectively creates one. One skid is placed against the mountain while the helicopter is held in a partial hover, with almost no margin for movement. Keeping a helicopter lightly balanced on its skids or wheels can itself spell disaster, especially with so little rotor-tip clearance and at such an altitude. It demands extraordinary judgement and control.

In June 1992, Sqn Ldr Pankaj Jaiswal and Sqn Ldr Pravin Kumar Sharma of 111 Helicopter Unit faced something strikingly similar during the Indo-British Panch Chuli expedition.

British mountaineer Stephen Venables had just made the first ascent of Panch Chuli V when, during the descent on 21 June, an abseil anchor failed. He fell about 80 metres, badly damaging his right knee, breaking his left ankle and injuring his chest. His companions somehow lowered him to a small tent platform at about 5,600 metres, over 18,000 ft, but getting him off the mountain by conventional means was virtually impossible.

The ordeal before the helicopter arrived was itself extraordinary. Venables had to be lowered some 400 metres down the mountain, a process that took around 12 agonising hours. By the time the party finally reached the tent platform, nearly 36 hours had passed since they had left their bivouac. In the days that followed, food and gas began running dangerously low, while an avalanche swept across part of the route being used by his companions. They were isolated, exhausted and rapidly running out of options.

The IAF responded, but the mountain was not cooperating. Jaiswal and Sharma made repeated attempts to reach the site through cloud and poor weather. When they finally managed to enter the enclosed basin below Panch Chuli V, there was still one fundamental problem, there was nowhere to land.

Victor Saunders, who was on the mountain, left an extraordinary description of what followed. The helicopter hovered close by while the climbers tried to understand the pilots' signals through the rotor wash. Dick Renshaw had to lie across the collapsed tents and equipment to stop them from being blown away, while Saunders physically held on to the injured Venables to prevent him sliding away in his sleeping bag. At 5,600 metres, they were also very close to the operating limits of the Alouette.

Then the pilots attempted what Saunders called a "half landing".

They placed one skid on the outer edge of the tiny tent platform while holding the rest of the helicopter clear of the mountain. The rotor tips were only inches from the snow-covered slope, and scarcely more above the heads of the men below. There was no winch. The aircraft therefore had to remain precariously held there while the badly injured Venables was physically pushed and hauled through the open door.

Even then, it nearly went wrong. As they struggled to get Venables aboard, the helicopter began to wander slightly and the co-pilot urgently gestured for them to hurry. In desperation, Venables put his broken ankle against the skid and pushed himself upwards, while Saunders heaved his other leg into the cabin. The door could not initially be closed. The helicopter wobbled away with Venables still not completely inside before his leg was finally drawn in and the Perspex door shut.

And then they flew him out.

The expedition report called it an "outstanding and very courageous piece of flying". The official citations were equally revealing. By then the wind had picked up, dark cloud surrounded the area and unpredictable cloud shifts were making an already marginal situation worse. With the slope offering no place to land, one pilot held the helicopter with its right skid touching the mountain while the other helped get the casualty aboard. Both Jaiswal and Sharma were subsequently awarded the Vayu Sena Medal.

Nun Kun itself has repeatedly demanded exceptional helicopter flying.

In 1979, Maj Gur Iqbal Singh Dhodi of 663 Squadron earned the Shaurya Chakra after landing amongst crevasses and enormous boulders at about 6,750 metres to evacuate a critically ill Japanese mountaineer.

In 1981, Capt Ranjit Singh Dev of 26 AOP Flight earned another Shaurya Chakra for a Nun Kun rescue in which the citation records the landing area at 23,800 ft, 800 ft above the aircraft's stated service ceiling. He even dropped his co-pilot at Advance Base Camp to reduce weight before going in alone, and subsequently returned for the remaining mountaineers.

Technology changes. The mountain does not. And sometimes, one skid is all the landing ground a helicopter pilot gets.

If any Western Army had pulled something like this off for a casevac in a vintage helicopter manufactured in the 60s, their entire state machinery would’ve gone bonkers praising their own & would’ve called it the sortie of the century. Most folks don’t fully realise that the probability of not coming back from such a flight for the pilots is more than a safe return. Next time in an airshow near you, try if you can get a glimpse of the Cheetah’s cockpit. A Maruti Swift dashboard has more components on it.

And yet, our warriors go on and on. Probably landed back, made a good night call home & went to sleep, woke up today for business as usual. Probably both pilots in their late twenties or thirties. Unreal commitment to duty & professionalism. Indian Army for you.

I thought the photograph was dramatic enough. Then the pilot sent me his own account. It was worse.

After my post on the 1992 Panch Chuli V rescue, Gp Capt Pankaj Jaiswal, who flew the mission with then Sqn Ldr Pravin Kumar Sharma, shared his photographs and a wonderfully detailed first-hand account of what actually happened at 18,372 ft.

Some details deserve to be added to the story.

On 24 June, they searched through worsening cloud for almost the entire day and found nothing. They returned the next morning. After refuelling at Dharchula, they began following footprints in fresh snow up the glacier.

Then the footprints disappeared beneath the debris of a massive avalanche. They pressed on. The tracks eventually reappeared.

Through a break in the cloud, far up the glacier, they finally saw what Jaiswal remembers as “three black spots on a white sheet of paper”. The tent, and the two men beside it. Relief lasted only until they got closer.

The tent was perched on a tiny clearing on a roughly 30-degree snow slope. At over 18,000 ft, they were attempting an out-of-ground-effect hover with almost no visual reference except the tent and two mountaineers. The canopy kept misting up. The pilots were having to exchange control of the helicopter so that each could periodically take oxygen. Cloud was drifting through the area. And there was nowhere to land.

They first signalled the mountaineers to uproot the tent and move it. One of them then had to sit on the tent to stop the rotor wash blowing it into the helicopter.

Jaiswal and Sharma tried approaching from both directions several times, attempting to place just one skid on the tiny ledge while simultaneously keeping the tail rotor clear of the mountain.

Jaiswal's description of what they could see from the cockpit is wonderfully understated, “Main rotor blades were appearing hopelessly close to the slope, but that had to be endured”.

Eventually, one skid was planted on the tent ledge. Jaiswal held the Cheetah steady while Sharma opened the door. That was when another problem began.

Stephen Venables was a large man, wrapped inside a sleeping bag, with badly broken legs. Victor Saunders had to somehow lift and push him uphill into the tiny Cheetah cabin. Venables was screaming in pain. The pilots could not help because keeping the helicopter balanced on that single skid required both of them.

Meanwhile the cloud was coming back, the canopy was still misting, they still needed oxygen, the rotor blades were swishing frighteningly close to the slope and, as Venables was pushed and pulled aboard, the entire helicopter was being shaken. Finally Saunders forced Venables' legs inside and slammed the door shut.

They lifted away. The unit recommended both pilots for decorations and was apparently told, “Boys, cas evac is routine for choppers”.

Only after accounts of the rescue began appearing in the foreign press did their new CO, Wg Cdr Sanjiv Mishra SC, VM, take up the case again. Both pilots were awarded the Vayu Sena Medal in 1994.

Venables later remembered looking into the Cheetah during those moments on the slope - “Suddenly I began to feel very very frightened... the rotor blades chopping so close to our heads and the faces of the two men inside, tense with concentration”.

The reply was simply, “It is God we must thank”.

Some photographs become considerably more remarkable once you know what was happening outside the frame.

Two days ago, BJP MP Dr. Nishikant Dubey made a serious accusation in the Supreme Court, stating:
> “If anyone in this country is responsible for inciting religious violence, it would be the Supreme Court and its judges!”
His statement caused a major controversy, and opposition parties strongly criticized him. However, well-known scientist, writer, and speaker Anand Ranganathan released a video statement, fully supporting Dubey. In fluent English, Ranganathan posed 9 powerful questions to the Supreme Court. These questions are very important. Below is a brief summary in Hindi which has now been translated into English for everyone to understand clearly:

*Anand Ranganathan’s 9 Questions to the Supreme Court:*

1. `Double Standards on Kashmir Issues:` The Supreme Court quickly took up petitions from opposition parties against the removal of Article 370, which had given special status to Jammu and Kashmir. But when petitions were filed regarding the 1990s atrocities against Kashmiri Hindus—such as forced displacement, home takeovers, destruction of temples, murders, rapes, and mass exodus—they were rejected by the Court saying, “It happened too long ago.” *Is this not double standards?Doesn’t this create anger among Hindus?Is this not what leads to religious conflict?*
2. `Silence on Waqf Board’s Misuse:` The Supreme Court is now worried about Waqf Board reforms. But in the last 30 years, the Waqf Board has illegally seized property, avoided taxes, and operated a parallel judicial system—yet the Court remained silent. If reforms are seen as a threat to Islam, then how was building mosques and dargahs on Hindu lands acceptable?Over 2 million Hindu properties were seized by the Waqf Board. The Supreme Court stayed silent. *If this is not religious bias, what is?*
3. `Temple Funds Used Elsewhere, Hindus Restricted:` Hindu temples are controlled by the government. Their income is used for madrassas, Haj pilgrimages, Waqf Boards, iftar feasts, and loans. But Hindu religious activities face restrictions. Petitions related to Hindu rights are often dismissed. Minorities are always given special priority. *Is this fair? Or is this a way to provoke Hindu anger?*
4. `Education Discrimination Against Hindus:` Under the Right to Education Act, Hindu schools must reserve 25% seats for minorities. But Muslim and Christian institutions are exempt from this rule. Thousands of Hindu schools had to close, and Hindu children now study in non-Hindu institutions. *Isn’t this encouraging religious conversion? Why doesn’t the Supreme Court see this one-sided rule?*
5. `Free Speech Hypocrisy:` When Hindus speak, it's called “hate speech.” When others speak, it is called “freedom of expression.” Nupur Sharma merely quoted from Hadith, and the Court called it hate speech. But when Stalin and other leaders called Sanatana Dharma a “disease,” the Court stayed silent. *Is this justice?*
6. `Biased Ban on Hindu Traditions:` The Supreme Court bans Hindu practices like Dussehra animal sacrifice. But no questions are raised about mass halal animal slaughter during Eid. During Janmashtami, Dahi Handi celebrations face height restrictions. But no action is taken against Muharram-related violence. Diwali crackers are called harmful to the environment, But Christmas fireworks face no criticism. *Is this not discrimination?*
7. `Worship Places Act Blocks Hindu Restoration:` The 1991 Places of Worship Act mandates that the religious character of places as of August 15, 1947, must not be changed. This law blocks Hindus from reclaiming ancient temples that were destroyed or converted. The Ram Mandir had to be fought for over many decades. Many other temples remain encroached. *Is this not historical injustice?*
8. `Targeting Only Hindu Traditions:` In the Sabarimala case, the Court hurt Hindu sentiments. Some Hindu temples follow male-only or female-only customs.But the Court only questioned Hindu traditions. In Islam, women cannot enter mosques or recite the Quran in-

A falling tree branch shattered my car's windshield in Mumbai. Insurance covered the glass. The dealer replaced it.

But the car was returned without a valid FASTag and without the mandatory HSRP colour sticker—both destroyed during the windshield replacement.

Now the owner must separately deal with banks, HSRP portals, OTPs, appointments and extra fees for something caused by the repair itself.

This is a systemic gap, not a customer mistake.

Request: Please make windshield replacement a single-window process where authorised workshops automatically facilitate FASTag & HSRP sticker replacement before handing the vehicle back.

One accident should not mean three bureaucratic errands.

𝟰) Gandhi refused to ask the British Auth for FORGIVENESS for Bhagat Singh.

𝟱) Savarkar’s mercy petitions to the British were written in the context of the political circumstances of that time, and at the BEHEST OF Gandhi.

𝟲) BRITISHERS left India after they realised that thy wont be able to fight 𝗦𝗨𝗕𝗛𝗔𝗦𝗛 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗥𝗔 𝗕𝗢𝗦𝗘 and the INA along w many true FREEDOM FIGHTERS.
Freedom wasn’t because of Gandhi and Nehru’s struggle.

𝟳) 𝗪𝗔𝗤𝗙 was formed to give illegal rights to Mùś1ímš on our land & properties by the CONg. Mùś1ímš were allowed to follow their Personal Law superseding our constitution and civil laws where it suited them.

𝟴) We could have won the 1962 WAR against China if Nehru n his teams had used our armies and airforce CAPABILITIES properly & not with their hands tied.

𝟵) China CAPTURED large areas of Indian territory during the 1962 war & after that, raising serious questions & intentions of Nehru’s and CONg Govt after that and its handling of the border issues.

𝟭𝟬) Nehru gave away our seat at the
𝗨𝗡 𝗦𝗘𝗖𝗨𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗬 𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗖𝗜𝗟 to China on a platter. We have suffered a lot due to this blunder.

𝟭𝟭) India under CONg handed 𝗧𝗜𝗕𝗘𝗧 to Chins which was a buffer between us and China on a platter and China now demands Arunachal, Sikkim too on the same basis.

𝟭𝟮) India would have won 1948 Kashmir war against Pakistan. Our Army was winning. But Nehru took the Kashmir issue to the 𝗨𝗡,it stopped the war and made the border as status quo and we lost half of Kashmir.

𝟭𝟯) Maharaja of 𝗝𝗔𝗠𝗠𝗨 & 𝗞𝗔𝗦𝗛𝗠𝗜𝗥, had agreed to merge with India without any conditions. But Nehru made JK as an AUTONOMOUS STATE with its own constitution and special rights under Art 370.

𝟭𝟰) The 1990 Hïndüs exodus from J&K was far more horrific than informed and it was a preplanned agenda executed by the separatists, Pakistanis, our leaders etc.

𝟭𝟱) 𝗔𝗠𝗔𝗡 𝗞𝗜 𝗔𝗦𝗛𝗔 was the brainchild of our leftists, LeLis and Is1amic groups to fool Hïndüs to keep Mùś1ímš keep growing.

𝟭𝟲) The claim that the 𝗧𝗔𝗝 𝗠𝗔𝗛𝗔𝗟 was built by Shahjahan for his wife was all BS. It’s supposedly a Hïndü temple, as were Ram mandir, Kashi and Mathura mandirs, Kutab minar and hundreds of more monuments.

𝟭𝟳) 𝗠𝗨𝗚𝗛𝗔𝗟 didn’t develop anything in India except looting, ki11ing and converting Hïndüs.

बिहार की राजधानी में पटना मेडिकल अस्पताल है जिसमें एक वार्ड है जिसे लावारिस (परित्यक्त) वार्ड कहा जाता है। यहां आपके पास ऐसे मरीज हैं जिनके पास वापस जाने के लिए कोई नहीं है क्योंकि उन्हें उनके परिवार ने छोड़ दिया है। उनकी भलाई के लिए देखने और प्रार्थना करने वाला कोई नहीं है। कम से कम कहने के लिए वार्ड की स्थिति अमानवीय है।

वे शारीरिक और भावनात्मक दोनों तरह से अत्यधिक पीड़ा में हैं। हर रोज रात 9 बजे एक आदमी इस वार्ड में पिछले 22 सालों से इन लोगों के लिए खाना और दवा लेकर आता है और सबसे पहला सवाल यही पूछता है- क्या आपको दर्द हो रहा है? भोजन और दवा गौण है, गुरमीत सिंह जो प्रदान करता है वह कुछ प्यार और सम्मान है। कपड़े की दुकान में पाँचों भाई जो कुछ भी कमाते हैं, वे प्रतिदिन 10% भोजन और दवा लाने में लगाते हैं।

उन्होंने पिछले 22 वर्षों में एक भी छुट्टी नहीं ली है और कारण सरल है - मैं परित्यक्त को नहीं छोड़ सकता। मरीज उन्हें भगवान के रूप में मानते हैं लेकिन उनका कहना है कि वह एक साधारण नश्वर हैं और सिर्फ उन लोगों के असहनीय दर्द को कम करने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं जिनके पास कोई नहीं है।
