that biryani “joke” guy got fired and suddenly puri mard jaat ko mirchi lag rahi hai, freedom of speech ki yaad aa rahi hai. but not one man in that room thought that perhaps promoting rape culture isn’t funny. jail mei daalo uss comedian ko bhi actually-lund fakeer sab ke sab…
dissent is dead in india. offline toh hai hai, it has been shrinking for 12 years now. but online bhi abhi, aapka aacount ban kardiya jayega if you say something the state doesn’t like. phir people give the CJP protest example to me — bhai, CJP is nothing but controlled opposition.
authoritarian and fascist-leaning systems do not always ban all dissent. they often allow a narrow, theatrical, harmless version of dissent so the regime can say: “look, democracy exists.” many authoritarian regimes allow a “token opposition” while other opposition figures are imprisoned, harassed, co-opted or divided. some dissent is allowed because it is manageable. examples like CJP isn't challenging the state in any way.
Greedy landlords who ignore laws and corrupt officials who abet them will go on. The immigrants who poured their blood, soul, and last rupee to build the greatest culinary mosaic this city has had in the 21st century get cheated and ruined.
What a shame. What a f-ing shame.

Traffic, (code for bad sprawl planning, car-centric design, and deteriorating public transit), limits how one experiences a city and, over time, dilutes much of the culture that makes the city great. Eventually, traffic itself becomes the defining experience of the city.
