I just watched this video where this young girl referred to Mr. Elumelu as "Tony."

Mr. Elumelu immediately cautioned her and told her to refer to him as "Mr. Elumelu" or "Chairman."

Then he told her that he does not subscribe to that Oyibo thing.

That took me back to when I first moved to the US.

In Nigeria, we referred to our teachers as Mr. or Mrs. [Surname] but in America, my professors were okay with being called by their first name.

"Hi Bob," "Hello Sandra."

It was weird ar first but I got used to it.

When I moved to NYC for work, I stopped by the CEO's office to say hello and introduce myself.

She was a white lady in her 50s.

So I greeted her "Good morning ma'am."

Her face flushed and she said "Good morning Sharon." With emphasis on the Sharon.

I got the message immediately and said "Good morning Sharon."

When I moved back to Nigeria even as a CIO, I told staff to call me JP. Some refused and referred to me as "Boss" or "Sir" and the ones that called me JP added a Mr. to the it.

But my colleagues would not have it. They would much rather be called by their titles.

This young lady clearly had not learnt to read the room to understand cultural differences.

I hope she learns fast.
