It is really quite sad to see the MEA—and most of the Indian media—clutching at straws. This is what the Toronto Star quotes Trudeau as saying at the inquiry, ABOUT THE SITUATION IN SEPT 2023:

“Trudeau said India insisted “‘show us the evidence.’ And at that point, it was primarily intelligence, not hard evidentiary proof. So we said, ‘well, let’s work together and look into your security services,’” but the Indian response was “‘No, no, no, we’re not doing that.’”

Most Indian news headlines and even reports conveniently omit the words “And at that point” to suggest Trudeau is speaking about last week’s accusations by Ottawa! Sample this headline from @htTweets: “MEA hits back after Justin Trudeau admits Canada had ‘no hard evidentiary proof’ linking India to Hardeep Nijjar killing”.

Also conveniently brushed aside is the fact that intelligence agencies gather intelligence, the police gather hard evidentiary proof and the courts pass judgment on this. Virtually all of India’s allegations about Pakistani official involvement in acts of violence in India over the past few decades, for example, fall within the realm of “intelligence”. This does not make them any less valid. If Pakistan were to cooperate with India, a lot of this intelligence would become hard evidentiary proof, good enough for a court of law to convict.

Finally, the MEA, in its desperation to sidetrack the issue at hand, wilfully ducks another inconvenient fact: the US indictment in the Pannun case says CC1, an Indian security official, had access to a video of Nijjar’s lifeless body hours after he was shot dead: “CC-1 sent GUPTA a video clip showing Nijjar’s bloody body slumped in his vehicle.” Intercepted conversations between Nikhil Gupta and CC1 showed the latter’s involvement in the Nijjar murder.

Why is this relevant? Because if Modi has now thrown CC1 under the bus—dismissing him and having him arrested for the Pannun plot—he can no longer disavow knowledge of the Nijjar killing either. CC1 knows who shot and sent that video. So there was at least one Indian govt official with a nexus to the Nijjar murder. That is where the MEA’s statements on Canada fall flat.

The only way to square the circle is for the MEA to say publicly that India’s “strategic ally”, the US, is also acting irresponsibly and that Biden, Harris & Co are maligning the Indian government, and helping Trudeau malign India, as part of their “vote bank politics”.

Somehow I don’t think the Modi government will say such a thing.

As high tension grips Indo-Canadian ties, it is imperative that Canada’s political leaders are sensitive to the impact on over a million Indian origin people living in Canada.

A prominent political leader, @theJagmeetSingh hijacking the moment to call for a ban on an ostensible “RSS network” is dangerous. That term is defined in Canada, by a Singh allied group, as a dog whistle to target several active Hindu charities and community orgs.

We deplore these comments as an inappropriate targeting of Hindu Canadians, especially in light of recent Hindu temple attacks and the brutal assault of a Hindu Canadian journalist.

I am glad we are having this discussion. There has been so much disinformation on this topic by folks who are distorting history and legal judgements to create divisions in the community.

Both @Raju4Equality and @SunitaSunitaV are being disingenuous. Ram Temple became a healing event for nearly a billion Hindus, and it happened legally. India’s highest court - which no one will ever accuse of being biased in anyway - allowed building of the temple and considered 400 years of history (not just going back to 1947, as Raju does in his analysis) in doing so.

Yet, it’s important to acknowledge that Babri masjid was illegally demolished by a mob. That was indeed a divisive event. It led to a lot of a riots in India.

But building of the temple happened in a legal and constructive way. To call building of Ram temple as a divisive event is deliberate ignorance of facts and sentiments about this historical redressal of a wrong that has been perpetuated for centuries. To denigrate the float that celebrates that symbol of faith is victimizing the community all over again.

The float is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate that redressal. But @Hindus4HR are intent on turning this into a controversy, egged on by well-known Islamist organizations with ties to extremist ideologies, for a simple reason: to divide Indian American community and to further their brand of extreme politics. We see the impact of that sort of politics in every part of America. Do look at their track record. Please.
