I’ve talked a few times about how strongly I support solar canopies/carports, but thought I would explain my reasoning and justification for it.

Other than providing covered parking, it can also offset average driving in the US.

I’m going to use the Tesla Model Y, which I’ve seen have an average efficiency of 235–260 Wh/mi. For this estimate I’ll assume 248 Wh/mi. The average driver travels 12,200 miles, according to Kelley Blue Book, meaning about 3,026 kWh.

The US averages 4–5 peak sun hours per day, so I’ll assume 4.5 hours.

For parking spot size, the average is 9 ft × 18 ft (162 sq ft). Modern solar panels produce roughly ~20 W per sq ft, meaning a canopy covering one space could support about 3.2 kW of solar capacity.

3.2 kW × 4.5 hours = 14.4 kWh

14.4 kWh × 365 days = 5,256 kWh

Assuming a system efficiency of roughly 80% after losses, that’s 4,205 kWh, more than offsetting the average driving.

So with some back-of-napkin math, one solar-covered parking space can generate the electricity needed for over a year of average EV driving.
