Today marks two years since my constituent, Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi, was killed by the IDF in the West Bank. There still has been no independent investigation or accountability for her killing, despite calls from her family, her loved ones, and Congress.

This is something I will continue to fight for, in her memory and to prevent further tragedy.

Islam may be left-coded in modern Western politics, but it is, unironically, perhaps the world’s most capitalist-oriented religion.

Its Prophet was a merchant from Mecca, a major trading hub in western Arabia, and Islamic jurisprudence went on to develop an extensive legal framework governing commerce, contracts, and private property.

Islam was anything but hostile to commerce or capital accumulation, even while restricting usury and imposing ethical obligations around redistribution. If anything, until the rise of the Italian city-states, the medieval Muslim world arguably exhibited some of the world’s strongest proto-capitalist tendencies.

You have to go to the fringes of Islam, to groups like the Qarmatians, to find radically egalitarian or communalist tendencies.

Notice this was achieved through diplomacy and compromise...not drone strikes.

Where once Ankara thought it could drone strike its way out of this...now it has come to understand, apparently, that war and tactical warfighting doesn't accomplish strategy.

Some might learn from this.

If you want long-term gains...and change...tactical war fighting and precision strikes are not paving the road, they are only maintaining the road. Compromise...diplomacy...meetings, rather than threats and bombing, can achieve a lot more in the long term.

One of the things I find deeply distasteful about this (and similar things like Canary Mission) is that the people it is targeting are private citizens engaged in completely legal civic engagement on volunteer, unpaid basis.

So it’s a paid effort to dig up dirt on and defame ordinary people.

Even if you set aside the fact that the thing they’re being smear on the basis of is participation in an organization which an absolutely majority of Democratic voters express a favorable opinion of, there’s something deeply Orwellian here even if DSA weren’t as popular and legitimate an actor (as measured in objective terms by elected offices won in free and fair elections) as it is.
