The FAA was established in 1958, years after the world's first scheduled commercial passenger flight took place on 1 January 1914. AI has not reached its maturity for a new federal agency to be established.

@ylecun @erikbryn Aerospace safety is overseen by the FAA, because people had had enough of dying due to shoddy manufacturing & maintenance, but there is no agency overseeing AI at all.

@David_Gunkel @mitpress Answering the first depends on how consciousness is achieved in our brain. If it is computable, then it is a technical problem rather than a philosophical one. The second brings pragmatical considerations, not about the 'ideal' entity. The third is changeable for everyone.

Many, including me, suggested this regulatory action to be taken years before. NHTSA was delayed but arrived at the right destination. NHTSA should also ban using "FSD" that implies Level 5 vehicles for Tesla's Level 2 vehicles.

Tesla's recall after NHTSA's investigation is a pivotal step in the history of ADAS. 362,758 Tesla vehicles that have been installed with or are pending installation of FSD Beta are affected.

Tesla will release an over-the-air (OTA) update without additional cost to customers in the coming weeks. This update aims to improve FSD's capability in overcoming the described scenarios. This recall shows OTA updates will be frequently used in the future for ADAS and AVs.
