It has been an exciting couple of months for me as a PhD researcher with @BathNLP!✨
🏆 I received a @UniofBath Doctoral Recognition Award
🍺 Spoke at @pintofscience
🇩🇪 Presented at the Construction Grammar, Creativity & AI Workshop
🏴 Exchanged ideas at the Cardiff NLP Workshop
This is indeed a superb letter from The Astronomer Royal of Scotland. “Someone, somewhere, has taken the decision to defund astrophysics research in the UK, but no-one seems quite sure who that was, or why.” I agree - my colleagues in particle physics have also tried, without success, to discover who owns the decision to damage physics research in the UK, perhaps irreparably, at a time when our economy desperately needs the skills and knowledge we develop and teach. @UKRI_News need to get a grip urgently and fix the problem someone, somewhere, has created.
To quote - ‘It is a fundamental betrayal of more than two decades of scientific leadership and a blow to the foundational stability of European big science.’
A view from our international partners on the current disaster in U.K. science and its long lasting damage to our international reputation (if not fixed immediately). https://t.co/agZVcLd4hz
It’s always the case that when funding is fiddled around with (for no good reason I can discern in this case) it’s young scientists who get hammered. Destroy the future on a whim, basically. I’m increasingly angry about this.
Entirely different recovery method, different launchsite operations, different engine layout, different diameter and the stage closeup don't even look like a falcon9. AND it was during a maxq abort test.
But people still plug their ears and say "they stole from us!!"
The tragedy of this is that it’s totally unnecessary - I think it’s a result of hasty (to put it politely) decision making at a level below ministers, and therefore will be fixable. But if it’s not fixed quickly the impact will be severe and there will be unpredictable consequences for physics as a whole in the U.K. And that is daft (again, polite language).
A major problem with using LLMs to learn things:
Me: "A is true, therefore B is false, right?"
LLM: "Right! Here's a ton of detail to confirm your belief."
Me: "Actually, A is false; B is true."
LLM: "Exactly right! Here's more detail to confirm that belief."
American funding for hard sciences has fallen 2/3 this year.
In physics, they are receiving 15% of what they did last year.
What the fuck are we doing?
Think how many times people use the term ‘she smells’ or use smell to put others down, how women are told they stink like rotten fish, or that ‘those people stink’. Smell is constantly used in class discrimination, ‘the awful stench of the working class’
