Personally, I hope the government will let capitalism run its course; if they can’t systematically turn a profit, why should the taxpayers come to their rescue?

Neither company has had any respect for the artists and creators whose work they trained on; neither has done anything substantive to address the threat of job loss that they themselves have alleged.

Both have acknowledged that their products could cause serious harm to humanity, and persisted anyway.

They have been it for themselves. If they can’t make it, so be it.

The Chinese do not need to distill anymore. They've climbed up the proverbially tech tree that to climb higher, they need to do actual frontier work. Distillation is marginal.

Any lobbying or legislation that calls for banning open weight models in the name of "distillation" is total BS. This is a fight against future American innovation.

The labs know that open weight models completely commoditize their revenue generator. They know that we will optimize it to 1/100th the costs. They know that we will stop concentrating our workloads on them. If we start using open models, they lose the understanding of workloads that they can build products around to *replace* your products as they move up to the app layer.

Remember: *they* trained on humanity's data and didn't pay a cent. If you own intelligence, you can tax humanity.

Do not let them fool you.

If your core technology continues to get commoditized (i.e. Kimi 3), you must go up the stack. The labs will continue to encroach on everyone in the app layer. You are their competition now.

I would be very careful to concentrate on them and send them your trajectories! Figma -> Claude Design is just the beginning--expect 20+ of these.

How your users navigate and use your products is an invaluable dataset. With the advent of Fable 5 not practicing ZDR, you should be super aware of this.

I think you are misinterpreting this. People don't care much about you one way or another. They care whether being rich can make you live longer. And you are not addressing this rather obvious point.

Also fwiw, I suspect that if everybody would do as many tests and scans as you did, the majority of people would find one or the other "incurable disease" that otherwise would go entirely unnoticed. Not that this is a good thing, I'm just saying the perfectly working body is the exception rather than the norm.

They can and will now legally scan any person's messages, emails and photos you send without a warrant

The way they passed this law when the majority of the European Parliament was against it will shock you:

They waited until most EP members were on holiday so only a few were present and then created an "urgent" vote for it to pass it through

There's nothing democratic about any of it and big powerful forces are behind this that can manipulate the EU for whatever they want

Implictly showing the EU is not democratic and not about what the people of Europe want, because once a law is rejected, you just re-submit it until nobody is watching and it's passed

Brilliant experiment.

Says something interesting about the rules of attention in algorithmic media that if you basically destroy the accounts with the most engagement, it ironically increases overall engagement, bc the best attention-maxxers are basically engagement parasites that gobble up views and, in the process, annoy the shit out of people.

Altho I think it uh raises an um uncomfortable question for X's head of product about whether shadow-banning a uh certain owner of a certain platform would increase daily active users on that particular platform.

@nickleferry @Suhail Thanks for the info and example! I'm planning to build something similar. The TTS sounds good, and I like the monotone style. I'd just run it through a de-esser. I'd love to use it for Finnish-language podcasts, but I'm not sure how well the open-source version handles Finnish.
