Airport experiences in the US and India.

After 15 days of extensive #travel across the US, spanning 7 cities from the East to West coast, experiencing multiple carriers (United, Delta, and Southwest), it's evident that Indian airlines and airports have much to learn from US airport security and airline operations. Given the US's status as a high-risk country with significant airport traffic, it offers a pertinent #comparison.

Here are 5 key #differences that, in my opinion, underscore the smoother domestic travel experience in the US:

1. #Punctuality reigned supreme: US flights consistently adhered to schedule, which helped us plan an entire day with clockwork precision. In one case where there was a technical snag in a plane, they arranged an alternate plane within 45 minutes. The robust investment in physical infrastructure, staff training, and operational efficiency facilitated this commendable on-time performance.

2. Seamless #security protocols: No need to remove anything from the bags, in any of the airports, was such a relief. You just need to empty your pockets. If there is no beep while passing through the security, no frisking. Even their tiniest airports have these 3D X-Ray scanners.

And you know how it's in India. We urgently need to get those 3-D x-ray scanners or develop them. Our larger airports need them very badly. Need to train the security staff in the use of these scanners. We need some Operations Research (OR) guys to streamline the operations. Don't rely entirely on common sense.

3. Simplified domestic #transfers: Unlike India, where additional security screenings are mandatory for domestic transfers, US airports facilitate easy gate-to-gate transitions, significantly easing travel logistics.

4. Deplaning #etiquette: Embracing a queue system during deplaning, allowing passengers ahead to disembark first, proved to be an unspoken yet effective time-saving practice.

5. Streamlined airport #entry processes: While implementing a no-checks entry system similar to the US may pose challenges in India, leveraging technologies like Digi Yatra can enhance efficiency and convenience. We need a broader adoption and optimization of the #DigiYatra system.

I am told more and more institutions are beginning to do this in the country. Brought to my notice by a concerned Jadavpur University faculty member and some good students who are looking for faculty positions in India.

To disregard merit and shortlist candidates just based on the source of institutional funding is trivializing the entire faculty recruitment process. Hope @ugc_india @mamidala90 look into this. @EduMinOfIndia
