We are delighted to share our new work as a preprint on medRxiv, examining hematopoietic aging in type 1 diabetes (T1D).
Analyzing data from >416,000 UK Biobank participants, we show that T1D is associated with accelerated hematopoietic aging, including earlier clonal hematopoiesis (CHIP) and disease-accelerated telomere attrition. Interestingly, telomere attrition—but not CHIP—was associated with myocardial infarction risk in T1D.
By integrating epidemiology, human genetics, Mendelian randomization, and single-cell regulatory genomics, our work identifies telomere biology as a potential contributor to excess cardiovascular risk in T1D.
This work was led by the incredibly talented Ziang Xu, who will join the University of Pennsylvania this summer for a PhD in Genomics & Computational Biology.
