India has blocked the release of The Voice of Hind Rajab, an Oscar nominated Tunisian film about the killing of a five-year-old Palestinian girl during Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza, according to its Indian distributor.

Distributor Manoj Nandwana said he was told the film could “break up” India Israel relations if released. He submitted it to the Central Board of Film Certification in February, aiming for a mid-March release ahead of the Academy Awards, but it was not approved.

Written and directed by Kaouther Ben Hania, the film portrays Hind Rajab’s final moments in January 2024 as her family tried to escape bombardment in Gaza City. It uses real audio of her calls for help, with actors recreating emergency responses
