🚨 This is not the cost of wind. It is the cost of failing to build the grid.

Britain can generate clean electricity in Scotland and other remote areas but our ageing network cannot carry enough of it to the cities and industries that need it.

So consumers pay three times:

1. Wind farms are paid to switch off.

2. Gas plants are paid to switch on elsewhere.

3. Households fund the belated grid upgrades that should have been built years ago.

On Tuesday alone, this failure reportedly cost £29 million: £3.4 million to switch off wind turbines and £25.6 million to fire up gas plants.

The National Audit Office says 50 of 56 essential grid projects are forecast to be late. Annual constraint costs could reach £7.8 billion, taking the cost to roughly £100 per household by the end of the decade.

And the cause? The NAO traces it partly to the Conservative government’s 2015 decision to adopt a more “market-led” approach to grid planning leaving Britain without an agreed plan while necessary upgrades were delayed.

This is Thatcherism’s infrastructure legacy: underinvest, delay, fragment responsibility and make the public pay vastly more later.

The wind is not wasting energy. Political failure is wasting wind.

Build the grid. Expand storage and interconnection. Stop blaming renewable energy for the cost of government incompetence.
