The strength of an economy is not determined by its exchange rate. An exchange rate is simply the price of a currency.

A few examples prove this:

1. Japan is the world’s fourth-largest economy with a GDP of over $4 trillion, yet the Japanese Yen trades at roughly 140–160 Yen to 1 US Dollar.

2. South Korea has a GDP of around $1.8 trillion, but its currency trades at about 1,300–1,400 Won to 1 US Dollar.

3. Vietnam’s economy exceeds $500 billion, despite an exchange rate of roughly 25,000 Dong to 1 US Dollar.

4. On the other hand, Kuwait has one of the world’s strongest currencies (about 0.31 Kuwaiti Dinar per US Dollar), but its economy is much smaller than Japan’s or Germany’s.

What determines an economy is its GDP, productivity, industrial output, exports, employment, and human capital; not the exchange rate. In fact, many successful export economies maintain relatively weaker currencies to stay competitive.

Nigeria needs a weak currency to boost its exports and this approach has improved our trade balance in the last three years.
