Swiss farmers planted flowers between their crops and watched pest damage drop by over half. The UK is now running the same trial across 15 farms. The reason this works is embarrassingly simple.

A Swiss study on winter wheat found that fields with wildflower strips had 40 to 53% fewer leaf beetle pests than fields without. Crop damage dropped 61%.

The mechanism is simple. Wildflowers feed hoverflies, lacewings, parasitic wasps, ladybugs, and ground beetles. Those insects eat the aphids, beetle larvae, and caterpillars that farmers would otherwise spray for. A few meters of wildflowers hosts an unpaid pest control crew that would jump at the chance to whoop some aphid ass.

In apple orchards where no insecticides had been used for five years, plots with wildflower alleyways had 9.2% damaged fruit. Control plots without flowers had 32.5%.

The UK is now running a five-year trial across 15 farms placing 6-meter flower strips through the middle of fields, not just at the edges, because the beneficial insects can't reach the center of a large field otherwise.

This works the same way in a backyard vegetable garden as it does on a commercial farm. Plant native flowering species near your tomatoes, beans, and squash. The pests still show up, but the predators show up too.

El benchmark que rompió la sala: este chip superó a una Nvidia RTX 5080 por más de 3x en inferencia de DeepSeek R1. Una lonchera de $1,499 superando a una tarjeta gráfica discreta de $1,000 en una carga de trabajo real de IA. Nvidia pasó una década convenciendo al mundo de que necesitabas su hardware para IA seria. AMD acaba de poner eso en un escritorio por la mitad del precio.

Este es el momento en que todas las suscripciones de IA se vuelven opcionales. Los abogados dejan de temer fugas de OpenAI. Los desarrolladores dejan de mirar el medidor de tokens. Los fundadores dejan de alquilar H100s para prototipos que nunca se envían porque la factura los asustó.

🇨🇳 | The last believed survivor of the “Long March” during the Chinese Civil War celebrated her 105th birthday.

Her name is Wang Quanying, she joined the Red Army as a medic when she was only 14 years old.

Born into a Tibetan family in 1921, Sichuan province, she lost both parents by age one.

 From age five, she was forced into harsh labor.

When the Red Army entered her hometown, Wang was attracted by their policy of protecting the poor and joined the Women's Independent Regiment.

The one-year-long march starting in 1934 under the leadership of Mao Zedong is viewed as one of the most daring military manoeuvres in modern history.



The Chinese Communist Party defied all odds, including total defeat, by what is often described as sheer revolutionary willpower.



Starting with about 100,000 people, only around 8,000 survivors eventually made it to their destination in Yan'an.



During battles with the Nationalist forces led by Chiang Kai-shek, Wang Quanying was cut off from her unit and went into hiding in 1936. Authorities verified her as a veteran in 1984.
