Vladimir Putin believes that democracy, democratic countries are weak, that it is a fragile system, he is sure that we will sooner or later get tired [of opposing him], that time is working for him.

But [the war in Ukraine] is as much a political battle as a military one. We have to show arguments in favor of democracy and freedom. Of course no one likes to pay more and more for electricity. But I believe that democracy educates people and they begin to understand the real reasons for what is happening.

The EU was a herbivore in a world of carnivores. The EU was in a stalemate. Ukraine gave us a boost. We live in a world of power politics, but we still believe that fair trade and the promotion of the rule of law can influence the situation. We have to admit that we need to behave differently with some leaders.
