🚨 Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya suffers fractured ribs after "most difficult day" in Israeli detention

Detained Gaza hospital director Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya suffered fractured ribs after severe beatings and endured what the Palestinian Prisoners' Media Office described as his "most difficult day" in detention on July 27. 

🔸 The office said the doctor, who suffers from heart disease and high blood pressure, has experienced a serious deterioration in his health.

🔸 He also spent 21 days in solitary confinement under harsh conditions and continues to be assaulted despite his critical condition.

🔸 Separately, Physicians for Human Rights said Israeli prison authorities provided a medical report confirming injuries to Abu Safiya's eye, head, and chest, and that it has petitioned an Israeli administrative court to allow an independent doctor to examine him.

🔸 Abu Safiya has been detained since December 27, 2024, after Israeli forces seized him while he was working at Kamal Adwan Hospital during attacks on northern Gaza. He remains imprisoned under Israel's "unlawful combatant" designation, which allows prolonged detention without charges or trial.

♦️Around 11,000 cancer patients in #Gaza are suffering from critical conditions that put their lives at imminent risk amid an unprecedented and severe shortage of medicines essential for cancer treatment, including chemotherapy drugs, lifesaving medicines, and supportive treatments. This shortage has forced many patients to suspend their treatment protocols and has deprived thousands of others of the medical care they urgently need, raising serious concerns about the rapid deterioration of their health conditions and severely undermining their chances of recovery and survival.

Israel’s large-scale military offensive has led to an unprecedented collapse of the healthcare system’s capacity in the Gaza Strip due to repeated direct attacks on medical facilities, the destruction of healthcare infrastructure, the killing, injury, and arbitrary arrest of medical personnel, and the imposition of severe restrictions on the entry of medicines, fuel, spare parts, medical equipment, and supplies. As a result, the health sector’s ability to provide essential and lifesaving treatment has been systematically undermined.

At least 300 Palestinian children have been killed in Gaza during the 300 days since the ceasefire was announced in October 2025, despite an agreement for “the suspension of military operations and the full entry of humanitarian aid and relief,” the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said on Thursday.

“A ceasefire that leaves an average of one child dead each and every day is failing children,” said UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, Edouard Beigbeder.

He added that hundreds more children had been injured, many of them severely, and that “children in Gaza are still waiting for the end to the violence they were promised.”

Beigbeder said statements issued in recent days had outlined a roadmap for the next phase of the ceasefire, including steps towards ending hostilities and expanding humanitarian aid. He added: “This offers new hope and a chance to finally stop children being killed.”

The UNICEF official said children had heard promises before, adding: “This time, agreements must translate into action.”

In a separate statement, UNICEF called on all parties to fulfil their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law and international human rights law. It urged them to protect children, ensure their access to essential goods and services, including healthcare, education, safe water and food, and allow humanitarian aid to reach children in need safely, quickly and without obstruction.

Number of Palestinian minors held in Israeli 'administrative detention' nearly doubles

The number of Palestinian minors held under administrative detention in Israel has increased significantly over roughly one year, rising from 103 in January 2025 to 191 in March 2026, according to Israel Prison Service data obtained by the organization Parents Against Child Detention.

Administrative detention allows individuals to be held indefinitely without being formally charged or tried. Under the controversial policy, which Israel says is used to address immediate security concerns, detainees are not informed of the specific allegations against them, while evidence is presented in closed court proceedings.

The data also showed a sharp rise in the number of minors held in administrative detention for more than a year, increasing more than eightfold from six in March 2025 to 50 in March 2026.

The figures indicate that administrative detention has become a more common method of holding Palestinian minors. At the start of 2025, around one-third of Palestinian minors held by Israel were in administrative detention, compared with nearly half by March 2026.

According to the Israel Prison Service, 3,198 Palestinians are currently being held under administrative detention, most of them from the occupied West Bank. The figure does not include Palestinians detained during the Israeli war on Gaza who are classified as “unlawful combatants.”

Masafer Yatta Council head Nidal Younes told Drop Site contributor Mohamed Awad that more than 40 Israeli settlers attacked Tuba after 9 p.m. Wednesday, attacking homes across the Palestinian village simultaneously.

More than four homes were burned, the remaining homes were vandalized, and residents were beaten with stones and clubs. Five Palestinians required medical treatment.

Younes called it part of an “ethnic cleansing” campaign carried out by settler gangs with Israeli military “support and protection.”

Nasr Nawajah, an activist and head of the Susiya Council, said the assault was “planned” and that Israeli forces and police “effectively enable” such attacks.

“Whenever Palestinians are the victims, the cases are always closed against unknown perpetrators,” he said.

A rare exception to that impunity came Thursday, when Israeli prosecutors charged settler Yinon Levi with reckless manslaughter in the July 2025 killing of Awdah Hathaleen, a Palestinian activist who worked on the Oscar-winning No Other Land, in neighboring Umm al-Khair. B’Tselem says it is the first time since Oct. 7, 2023, that an Israeli has been indicted for killing a Palestinian in the West Bank.

The charge comes after more than 1,380 settler-related attacks across over 250 Palestinian communities in 2026 alone, leaving about 900 Palestinians injured and more than 2,300 displaced, according to UN OCHA⁠.
