And this distinction, between the "good people" and the "bad government," is the psychological escape hatch that the entire system depends on.

Because as long as the citizen is separable from the state in their own mind, the accounting never closes.

The government does the bombing.

The citizen watches it on television and feels complicated about it.

The government does the coup.

The citizen didn't vote for that particular senator.

The government imposes the sanctions that starve children.

The citizen donates to a food bank in their own city.

The gap between the citizen and the state is real in some ways and completely fictional in the ways that matter.

The taxes are not fictional.

The silence is not fictional.

The vote cast for the candidate who promised fewer wars and delivered the same wars is not fictional.

The complicity is not fictional.

Only the innocence is.
