55 years on tweeting the events leading up to the emergence of Alec Douglas-Home as Tory leader. A @MileEndInst project by @philipjcowley & @whyoutloud.
It's 1963 and you are a Conservative Member of Parliament. Lord Home is available to be your next leader so who do you want? By the way Lord Home is available...
Palace will have views: keep HMQ out of politics by making sure successor nominated by PM can command confidence of parliament. Still raw memories of how Queen perceived to have been unfairly drawn too close to politics when Tory ‘Magic Circle’ chose Alec Douglas-Home in 1963
@JohnRentoul There's the story of when Heath invited Home to join him, Eden, Macmillan & Wilson at De Gaulle's 1970 funeral - Home said "With all these former PMs you don't need your Foreign Secretary"; Heath replied "But you are a former PM yourself"; Home: "So I am, I'd quite forgotten"

Any comments, thoughts etc. would be very welcome and can be sent to: [email protected]
@philipjcowley@alecemerges@whyoutloud A brilliant synthesis of reportage and history, thank you so much. Quintin and Enoch all too resonant, if not emergent, 55 years later.
