Great article by @maxseddon @xtophercook on the leaked Russian documents (the 4th in a series), this time about how Russia prepares for simultaneous/opportunistic attacks on the ROK and Japan when planning a surprise attack on NATO. https://t.co/cwsn3lgw7S
We got a look at some potential Russian strike targets in Japan and South Korea in the event a conflict with NATO leads to “horizontal escalation.” There are lots of civilian targets –including nuclear power plants. And a gif! with @xtophercook https://t.co/gZRUBjeGfm
update! something is happening with Russian forces in Syria! heavy lifters have turned up at Hmeimim, S-400 launchers have been packed up at the base, things on the move. Not clear if this is withdrawal or sending surpluses home, but big move of materiel. https://t.co/ukgewyxMeT
Strikingly little movement at both places: planes standing about for 24hrs at Khmeimim. No movement of kit on quays at Tartus. The warships are outside port - but loitering nearby outside range of a rogue mortar. But - above all - the air traffic just isn't there for an evac.
Today marks 7 years since the horrific assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia. In parallel with @RSF_inter colleagues around the world, we gathered in London in remembrance and solidarity with Daphne’s family & civil society in Malta. We’re still calling for #JusticeforDaphne.
Russia has been secretly acquiring sensitive goods in India and explored building facilities there to secure components for its war effort, according to Russian state correspondence seen by @FT.

Forecasts of US presidential elections are everywhere, and they’re discussed obsessively by journalists and the public. But are they any good? @dean_c_knox, @seanjwestwood, and I show we’re decades, centuries, or (sometimes) millenia away from evidence that they are any better than random guessing, let alone which forecast is most accurate.

@CyclingTheSeaso@Samfr you could do it fairly easily by asking schools to submit evidence (where having lots of kids on funded plans would be assumed v strong evidence).
An unfortunate update to this story: The office of the prosecutor-general of Ukraine said on Sunday evening that the body of a UK citizen had been recovered from the debris of the hotel. I understand this person was a Reuters security advisor. Awful news. Thoughts with his family and colleagues. https://t.co/qM6RDxyIhO

This is of course an interesting article and while those deep into the subject matter might not be surprised by much, others might get an eye opener.
And this is from '08 - '14.
These two maps show possible Baltic- and Northern Fleet nuclear targets.
A number in Norway
I hope decision-makers in Germany take a close look at these maps.
Germany won't be targeted because of medium-range weapons deployed on its territory; it's always been a Russian target.
The sooner we accept this, the sooner we can discuss appropriate policy solutions.

New reporting by @maxseddon and @xtophercook on Russia's long-range strike capabilities and doctrine reveals a pre-targeted set of facilities across Europe, including Norway and Germany, which could be engaged in times of war.
Note that these maps date from 2008-2014.

@xtophercook The leaked documents also indicate that Russia has the capability to carry tactical nuclear weapons on surface ships despite a 1991 deal with the US to remove them.
Russia rehearsed this in June – but the documents indicate they have been doing this for much longer.
