Honored and excited to have received the David Roye Jr Scholarship from Pride Ortho/Columbia! I am grateful to have experienced first-hand the incredible camaraderie and culture of mentorship on top of world-class training during my acting internship at Columbia this month (1/2)
I have a thought experiment for #OrthoTwitter#MedTwitter@AAOS1 and @acgme
Consider: #OrthopaedicSurgery has the lowest gender diversity of all medical subspecialties. We are actively trying to recruit and retain more women in training and practice within our field 1/?
Hi #MedTwitter & #orthotwitter, I'm Alex, a rising MS4 at @WeillCornell and applying for orthopaedic surgery in #Match2023. My passions include MedEd/mentorship, hand and spine research, and piano/composing music. I look forward to connecting with future colleagues and mentors!
Gender affirming care is not child abuse.
Removing trans and other LGBTQ kids from their homes because you fail to understand their humanity… now THAT is child abuse.
Sorry @WINNews_Ben, but I have to call you out for this. Three doctors interviewed and both men were titled as “Dr” while the female was left untitled. It’s really not good enough. Medical women deserve the same respect as our male colleagues. #Bendigo#MedTwitter
More great work from @lzyapp in @BoneJointJ:
In >108K 🏴 pts, standardized mortality rates were better after #TKA & #rTKA than the general population. Mortality worse with inflam arthropathy, PJI, deprivation, ⬆️age & ⬆️comorbidities #knee#orthotwitter

Today, a PD thanked me for including that I was a member of the LGBTQ+ community in my personal statement. This made my eyes well up because it was a fear of mine prior to applying: the stigma & discrimination we still face. Her statement meant the world 🙏🏽#match2022#MedTwitter
Miscarriage. A 🧵;
In June I found out I was pregnant.
I was esctatic.
@momandel & I had been trying for a while.
I knew it gets harder after 35 (I'm 37 now).
It's also harder when you are stressed.
And some data that female surgeons struggle more than most with fertility.
Attention ortho PDs/admission committees:
Twitter support is needed but what are we doing?
Are we:
Asking tough questions during interviews?
Purposefully ranking applicants who support an inclusive community?
Valuing DEI work on CVs?
Nothing changes if nothing changes.
I want to publicly say that if I ever find which applicant or future colleague posted the racist & misogynist chats on the ortho Google sheets, I will not rest until I drive you out of our specialty.
We are better than that and it is you who do not belong.

Found myself getting misgendered more by staff this weekend.
Not saying this is the best or only way, but this is how I approached it.
I waited until they could get a sense of me and that I was friendly and easy going.

I got my first two doses of the Pfizer covid vaccine knowing that I would soon try to get pregnant. Today at 28 weeks pregnant I got my booster to keep me and my growing baby healthy. Covid is more severe in pregnant women and vaccines are safe in pregnancy! 💉💪🤰🏼
