I think things shifted with the advent of modern media and marketing techniques. There's a difference between letting kids see adult behavior isolated within their community versus the glorification or promotion of said activities in mass media. The psychological effect is compounded.

Violence should only be acceptable in instances of:

*Self Defense
*Defense/Protection of another victim of violence
*Combat Sports where the violence is consensual

Violence should NOT be acceptable for any other reason, INCLUDING:

*He called you a racial slur
*He said words you don't approve of or think are "dangerous"
*He fucked your wife
*She cheated on you

We really need to de-normalize the idea of violence as a response to getting our feelings hurt.
