Today is a dark day for justice.

Ilham Aliyev has sentenced a young Azerbaijani scholar, Bahruz Samadov, to 15 years in prison.

His crime?

He dared to dream of peace.
He believed that Armenians and Azerbaijanis—two peoples torn apart by decades of violence and propaganda—could learn to see each other not as enemies, but as fellow human beings.

He believed that dialogue is stronger than hatred, that peace is more powerful than war.

But for Aliyev, that dream is a threat. A threat to the system he feeds: one built on fear, division, and endless conflicts.

Aliyev has openly admitted why Bahruz is being punished: because he “mingled” with Armenians. Because he refused to hate. Because he dared to love peace in a country where peace has become a crime.

The regime’s media machine runs day and night, pouring out venom against Armenians, keeping the flames of hatred alive. And Bahruz? He tried to put that fire out—with compassion, with courage, with truth. That’s why the regime hates him. That’s why the the regime crushed him with a sentence as cruel as it is unjust.

The ugliness of this regime is no longer hidden. It is seen and felt by every peace-loving soul who still believes in a better world.

Today, evil triumphed again.
Today, hundreds of political prisoners remain in the regime’s dungeons. But tomorrow, they will lead the nation.

Bahruz Samadov has declared a hunger strike in response to the prosecutor demanding a 16-year prison sentence for him. He is already on the third day of his hunger strike.

He also did not accept the products we brought earlier.

We, representatives of civil society, journalists, human rights defenders, and academics call on all activists, media professionals, and advocates of justice to help spread this letter and support our cause.

On the morning of August 27th, independent journalist and researcher Javid Aga went missing, and we suspect that he may have been abducted by government forces in Azerbaijan. According to his friends, he was supposed to travel abroad for study and was on his way to the airport. However, the airline has confirmed that no passenger by the name of Javid Aga boarded the flight.

Javid Aga is known for his critical stance against the authoritarian regime in Azerbaijan and his outspoken opposition to the war. His sudden disappearance is part of a broader pattern of repression conducted by the Azerbaijani government against its own citizens. Currently, over 300 political prisoners are being held in Azerbaijani jails. Among the most recent arrests is that of Bahruz Samedov, a political scientist charged with treason due to his anti-war stance. This indicates a clear shift in the government's repressive apparatus, now targeting peace advocates and war critics.

We urge everyone to spread this letter to help prevent the torture that Javid Aga may currently be facing.

Your voice can make a difference in ensuring their safety and in defending the rights of all political prisoners in Azerbaijan.
