I've done something stupid. Something I advise others not to do.
I've read the comments underneath a climate-related post on X.
So now I'm going to address some of these comments in a thread (because no-one should amplify this stuff by replying to it). 🧵
I visited @RogerHallamCS21 in prison today. He’s serving a 5-year prison sentence for organising a peaceful protest against climate collapse. That’s the longest sentence for nonviolent action since WW2.
After working through the cold halls and sniffer dogs, I found him in the visitors' area as chipper and visionary as ever. He would quickly dismiss the hardships of prison life - no glasses, no paracetamol for the flu, TVs blaring all night - as “no big shakes” compared to the horrors we face. He takes prison in his stride as a resistor.
The criminalisation of protest in the UK and across the world is eroding our democracy. It’s a toxic limitation on our rights and freedoms. However, Roger doesn’t want your sympathy or any Free Roger campaigns. This is his 7th time inside, and he remains laser-focused on the mission at hand. He wants people to go into resistance. Only people power will shake the behemoth of the oligarchy.
He laid out his vision for a new society built on cooperation, assemblies, and mutual aid. The climate and social shocks are now locked in. The Institute of Actuaries predicts 4 billion deaths at 3C warming in the following decades. All else now pales to the horror we face.
Roger isn’t an easy person to work with. He moves like fire, igniting and burning movements with his endless energy. Those close to him know what pain this can leave in its wake. What always draws me back to him, though, is his determination to spark a revolutionary moment.
This is what we dream of—a new society based on care and compassion to ward off the worst of social breakdown. Yes, that’s fascism and genocide, in case you’ve missed it. Every right and dignity we win now is a step towards that progressive revolution.
To be part of it, join the 1000+ people outside the Royal Courts of Justice in London on Jan 29th and 30 from 9-5 to demand the release of all political prisoners. We will resist. If you can't make it, donate to @defendourjuries, and you'll be there in spirit.
This is our moment to check the creep of authoritarianism. Don’t miss it, or you’ll be next in the cells..
The climate-driven storm of the century is a wake-up call that the climate crisis is already on our doorstep 🌍 #StormEowyn
Yet, UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves is pushing for mass airport expansion🛫
This is the worst kind of short-term thinking 👇

@tonyvaughanMP one of your constituents here - I hope you will be supporting the climate and nature bill? This will decide my vote at the next election.
Just extraordinary that the Government is considering a 3-line whip to prevent MPs voting with their conscience for the science-led Climate & Nature Bill tomorrow. #CANBill@TheENDSReport@zerohour_uk

I’m still hoping this isn’t true. In what world would a Labour Government want to scupper the one Bill that brings climate & nature restoration together, increases ambition & generates good jobs & security in every constituency? @zerohour_uk https://t.co/G6FxGFyfal
@pigreen1 Totally agree. I'm sorry to say it but I think Starmer's position is now untenable. He greatly underestimates the wide strength of feeling on this.
This is extraordinary! The Government says it will expel MPs if they vote for the Climate & Nature Bill for the vital action to protect our environment—backed by thousands of scientists, NGOs, councils and businesses.
It should be a vote of conscience.

Thanks for listening, Mike! Can’t say I have any idea what’s on your running order- if that’s what you can call your bile. I’ll take no lectures about hating Britain from anyone who hasn’t had a good word to say about this country in decades and/or anyone using an appalling failure of the state and the trauma of families for their own political purposes.

Watching Elon Musk and others slip so seamlessly from liberalism to fascism is a reminder of how porous the boundaries are between those two positions…
World's top wheat exporter makes concerning decision after experiencing heavy losses:
"The profitability of grain crops is approaching zero"
This may be a canary in the coal mine, a harbinger of what could be coming globally as a result of climate change

Joe was arrested this morning for allegedly thinking about taking nonviolent action at airports last year.
For THINKING about taking nonviolent action. LAST YEAR.
@YvetteCooperMP is this what democracy looks like?
Supremely bleak news from the Met Office this morning, confirming atmospheric concentrations of CO2 jumped by more than expected last year as emissions continued to rise and natural carbon sinks performed worse than expected. https://t.co/BqaE8PxhEO
NEW: Elon Musk’s X is a weapon currently owned and controlled by a non-state entity. But from January 20, that changes. At that point, we need to understand in the context of information warfare from a hostile nation state.

Watts, a veteran, recalls being told military personnel & families were safer because they had their own water supply. He now fears water may have been contaminated - the aquifer lay below the fire training ground. PFOS, used in firefighting foam, has since been globally banned.
Vast swathes of farm fields are spread with sewage sludge - a mix of human & industrial waste - each year. We tested it & found levels of PFAS forever chemicals that wouldn't be considered safe for use on allotments. Our article in @guardian

Nature is not a political football. Restoring wildlife is vital, not a point scoring exercise. All politicians need a GCSE in Natural History. No 10 blocks beaver release plan as officials view it as ’Tory legacy’. #gcsenathist @CarolineLucas https://t.co/jEvOaNQzRk
