In 1996, Apple lost more than $800 million.
Steve Jobs had been fired a decade earlier.
He was asked in 1996 what Apple should do.
"I still think Apple has a future. I think the way out is to innovate.”
He became Apple CEO again in 1997.
Naval Ravikant: “You only have to be right once”
In the clip below, Naval reflects on how it took 13 years after starting his first startup when he was 23 before founding AngelList.
“Entrepreneurial ventures fail all the time. Most of my companies failed. I actually started seven companies, and I’ve launched about 40 or 50 projects over my career. And AngelList is the first one that I would truly say is product, market, entrepreneur fit for me that might succeed down the road.”
He tells the audience:
“It’s a low hit rate over your career, but you only have to be right once… So just keep trying, just keep iterating… a lot of it is market timing and you learn a lot of lessons.”
In his essay How To Be Successful, Sam Altman writes:
“’I will fail many times, and I will be really right once’ is the entrepreneurs’ way. You have to give yourself a lot of chances to get lucky.”
A friend of mine suggested that I clarify the nature of the danger of woke AI, especially forced diversity.
If an AI is programmed to push for diversity at all costs, as Google Gemini was, then it will do whatever it can to cause that outcome, potentially even killing people.
The notion that you can build a good product and it will create a big company without marketing is one of the biggest misconceptions I have heard.
There are a lot of companies with good products that haven’t done well.
No matter how great your product is, if you can’t get it in front of people you will lose.
Sure a good product will spread virally, but you have to kick start it somehow… by getting people to your site.
Marketing doesn’t have to be what you are used to in the traditional sense such as buying traffic… it could be press like what OpenAI leverages heavily.
Or product launches like Apple focuses on.
Or creating videos of how a truck is faster in a drag race than a sports car… like Tesla did.
You don’t have the leverage the normal marketing channels that people are used to, but if you want to do well you have to leverage marketing.
It doesn’t matter how good your product is…
Naval Ravikant: “Networking is overrated… Go do something great and your network will instantly emerge.”
In the clip below, Naval gives the following advice to startup founders:
“Don’t spend your time doing meetings unless you really, really have to. I really think networking is overrated. There’s all these articles about how you’ve got to network more, and it makes me want to vomit.”
Instead he suggests:
“Go do something great and your network will instantly emerge. If you build a great product or if you get a good customer base, I guarantee you will get funded.”
Recruiting (customers and employees) and learning from really smart people are two exceptions. But don’t worry about building relationships with VCs or going to conferences early on. Just focus on your product, your team, and your users.

You’re wasting your time creating content.
If you don’t believe me just look at these two stats.
94.29% of web pages got 0 traffic from Google in the last 30 days.
And… of the 5,204,391 social media posts we analyzed over the last 30 days, 59.41% of them had no engagement.
Literally, no engagement. No likes, no comments, no shares…
Does this mean you shouldn’t create content?
No, you have to create content. Without it, it’s hard to market a brand.
But the issue isn’t content, the real issue is the type of content you are creating.
If you are going to create content, follow these 3 rules. That way, you aren’t wasting your time…
Rule #1: You have to talk about something new.
From the tests we ran on our own websites, every time we blog about something new that others haven’t really talked much about, the post on average gets 104% more visitors.
Plus, we send out email blasts every time we release a new post. And the emails that talk about new topics have a higher open rate on average by 43.09%.
Rule #2: Don’t create content for the sake of creating it.
When we do marketing for companies we tend to delete a lot of their content.
Most people don’t realize this but having bad content on your site can decrease your overall site’s traffic.
On my blog, when we merged and deleted 12% of our content, we saw an increase in organic search traffic by 19.11%.
You saw that right, with less content we were able to get more traffic.
We see the same thing with social media. If you keep posting crap content, it hurts your reach and then when you post good content, very few people end up seeing it.
Rule #3: It’s all about the hook.
Even if your content is amazing, no one is guaranteed to see, watch, listen or read it.
A goldfish has an attention span of 9 seconds. Microsoft found that humans have an attention span of 8 seconds.
That's how hard it is to get people's attention.
If you can’t hook people in the first sentence or moment of your content you won’t keep them.
As David Ogilvy once said, “On average, five times as many people read the headline as read the body copy. When you have written your headline, you have spent eighty cents out of your dollar.”
My favorite 5 prompts for marketers using ChatGPT.
Prompt #1: Please write a blog post about [insert the topic here] and use stats and data throughout the article while citing your sources as well as write the introduction in a storytelling format.
By having ChatGPT add storytelling in your introductory paragraph you will be able to keep the reader more engaged.
And when you add in stats and data, it helps with credibility.
Plus this format also makes it easier for me to modify the content.
Prompt #2: Please share interesting stats about [insert the topic here] that very few people are talking about. Please cite your sources.
This prompt gives me ideas for social content, blog posts, and podcast episodes.
Prompt #3: What topics does [insert competitor URL] discuss the most frequently?
This is one of the easiest ways to figure out what your competitors talk about. It will give you specific ideas of what to blog about.
Prompt #4: What are the most popular social posts about [insert the topic] based on likes and shares?
A great prompt to find out what kind of social content you can try posting.
Prompt #5: What are the most popular blog posts on [competitor URL]?
You typically will get 3 results. It’s a great way to find evergreen topics to blog on that keep producing organic search traffic.
