@medicalaxioms Two observations. 1) nurses are an important part of the team for managing requests to leave AMA. 2) patient requests to leave AMA are a valuable opportunity to find out what patients value while theyโre in the hospital.
Eager to hear from my colleagues about their ethical challenges this past year with COVID. Hope you'll join me for this discussion
Will There be Enough Ventilators? Rationing, Scarcity, and Other Ethical Challenges for Hospitalists During the COVID-19 Pandemic #shmconverge
@HeatherNHofmann@DrSunilKSahai@SocietyHospMed Wait, the cartoons are good aren't they? The books are interminable and meandering. And my kids always caught me when I tried to skip a page.

My colleague Cynthia Geppert is the perfect person to give this talk. More collaboration with our c-l psychiatric colleagues can help minimize ethical concerns on the floor.

@jbullockruns Better non-gendered advice now? Curious to hear from others.
I might say to a patient, "Leaving the hospital now is not as safe & not what I recommend, but your care should fit with your preferences and I will support you however you choose. Iโm here to help.โ
@jbullockruns "If a patient is determined to try an improper or dangerous medicine, a physician should refuse his sanction; but he has no right to complain of his advice not being followed.โ
@arunimako @jbullockruns Agree! It is hard to envision high quality hospital care without without good coordination with the PCP. Lots of data on timely outpatient f/u linked with reduced 30-day readmits. https://t.co/IBAhnLd0Q0
@WrayCharles@aoglasser @jbullockruns Sharing decisions with pts does not ask MD to withhold their professional judgment or give pts whatever they ask for without regard to accepted standards of care, but rather allows for collaboration on a medically appropriate treatment plan that respects what is important to pts.
Amanda Gorman's incredibly inspiring words at Biden Inauguration "...for there is always light if only we're brave enough to see it, if only we're brave enough to be it."
Our future is bright!
