California is mobilizing on behalf of local news organizations. I urge Gov. Newsom to support local news, and democracy. The rest of the country needs to do the same. https://t.co/wbYrPsee4h
For-profit prison operator The GEO Group just gave another $1 million to Byron Donalds, the Republican nominee for governor in Florida.
GEO has now donated more than $2.5 million to Donalds since he launched his campaign.
U.S. Senator Ashley Moody (and Rick Scott) refuse to support a bill, already passed in the U.S. House, that would grant legal protections to Haitians losing TPS. Advocates gather at her Miami office to call her out, and billboards have gone up in Tampa and Miami.
🔥CPI inflation jumped 0.4% and held at a 3.4% gain from a year ago.
Core CPI, which exclude food & energy, rose a hotter than expected 0.3%. The gains were heavily in services, a problem for the Fed.
The super core services rose a wicked hot 0.5% and were up 3% from a year ago. That marks an acceleration from July. Gains were broad based. Notable double-digit gains in in-home health care. The care economy was hit hardest by the loss in immigrant workers, which hit another cliff in late July due to the loss in the Temporary Protected Status of Haitian workers.
Those gains coupled with yesterday’s hot PPI report suggest the PCE index, the Fed’s target, will rise 0.4% in August; the core will rise 0.3%. That will push the annual rise in those figures to 3.8 and 3.4%, respectively. That is too hot and still well above the Fed’s 2% target.
Pressures continue to build in the pipeline in both goods and service sector prices. The ISM pricing component accelerated again this year. Manufacturing pressures are high; services were higher yet.
Goods will get an extra lift from the recent surge in diesel prices. They hit a new record in recent days and show up in just about everything that is shipped. Limited refining capacity and damage to the capacity in Russia is adding the upward pressure to those prices and prompted them to decouple from oil prices.
The Fed will begin hiking in September, removing what it gave us in rate cuts in late 2025. We now expect three rate hikes by early 2026. The probability that the vote will be unanimous just rose. That would provide a much needed boost to the Fed’s inflation-fighting credibility, something the bond market is craving. The Fed controls overnight short-term rate. The bond vigilantes control the longer-term interest rates, and they have grown nervous.
The problem isn't boomers.
The problem isn't immigrants.
The Social Security actuaries say there's one cause of the trust fund emptying 30 years sooner than it should – and it's the billionaires who do not pay in on all of their income.
SOCIAL SECURITY HAS A BILLIONAIRE PROBLEM

Bring in some automation, robotics technicians to explain how simple it would be to teach Anericans to operate them - so Wall St has no excuse for offshoring our Jobs (AND) Tax Revenue.
NEWS - Joe, diGenova, a Trump loyalist who had been tapped to oversee a sprawling and controversial DOJ conspiracy investigation targeting political foes of President Donald Trump abruptly resigned Thursday, per sources. https://t.co/wPKs2k993d
It's annoying to see the "$40T in debt, how do we do anything" replies as if doing stuff that actually helps people is out of bounds while tax cuts for the rich and a ridiculously low min wage that underfunds programs and $500B more for the military is just fine.
If Trump really wanted to do a $5000 dividend for everyone, we could do that by raising taxes where they should be raised. Tax these companies that got all the tariff rebates after we paid higher prices on everything.
I’ve received a lot of questions about President Trump’s promise of $5k dividend checks if Republicans win the midterms and whether it’s lawful. I took a welcome break from Clancy and provided my thoughts.
Trump’s promise may theoretically violate 18 USC 597 or even 600, but practically speaking an investigation isn't going anywhere.
A sitting president can't be prosecuted and AG Todd Blanche obviously isn’t going to look into this.
Even if a Democratic wins in 2028, Trump’s statement would almost certainly be viewed as a presumptively immune official act according to SCOTUS.
There is arguably no quid pro quo because someone who votes Democrat, splits their ticket, or doesn't vote at all would get the same benefit.
Candidates make these types of promises all the time and they're political speech protected by the First Amendment. Democrats promise to forgive student loans, pay for child or medical care, or provide other government benefits if they're elected.
I understand that a check is different than an entitlement or tax credit, but I don’t think the distinction is sufficient to make the former unlawful. So even though it's an interesting academic exercise, I don't think Trump's statement is a violation of criminal law and even if it were, the investigation isn't going anywhere.
A really sad day. This is the paper that made the nation care about Jeffrey Epstein and helped uncover the Hope Florida scandal alongside @TB_Times.
Florida needs the @MiamiHerald
The @MiamiHerald eliminated 30 positions today including excellent City of Miami beat reporter @tessriski & legend @kaufsports.
The Miami Beach beat reporter was open but won’t be filled.
Is the Miami Herald going to cover the City of Miami anymore?
Local journalism matters.
