In India, at least, you need to be from a certain socio-economic class to be accepted as a queer person because not all queer people are allowed to be free. Pride parades are for south Delhi kids to socialise and party at kitty su, their pride is not a protest.

I have heard some form of this from people increasingly over the past few years. Mostly from communities that are bullied and want to build their future elsewhere. Heard it again today, and each time it rankles me within.

Will this sense of fear, or at least discrimination that stems from a person’s identity be reduced if we as a country refer to ourselves more often as “Bharat” than, “India” ?
